Nurse Extern Med Surg

Banner Health is seeking nursing students to join our Nurse Extern program at Banner University Medical Center Tucson. This position offers hands-on clinical experience in a medical-surgical setting before you graduate and obtain your RN license.

You will work on Medical Surgical 7W, a 28-bed unit at Banner University Medical Center caring for patients with multiple health concerns. Under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor, you will gain practical experience and develop clinical skills in preparation for your nursing career.

Responsibilities

• Practice patient assessment and data collection in the electronic medical record
• Administer medications under direct RN supervision
• Adjust IV pump rates and manage IV devices, parenteral fluids, and blood products
• Initiate, titrate, and discontinue oxygen therapy
• Perform nursing skills for which you have received didactic and clinical instruction and can provide evidence of competency from your nursing program
• Participate in patient care planning, implementation, and evaluation
• Identify and report significant patient observations to your preceptor
• Observe clinical procedures and participate in activities relevant to your patient population
• Spend time with the clinical case manager to expand your learning
• All work must be performed under direct supervision of a licensed professional registered nurse

Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program
• Within 12 months of graduation at time of hire
• Able to graduate on your initial anticipated graduation date
• Current BLS certification
• Ability to pass the Nursing State Boards within 90 days after graduation (or within an additional 60 days if a second attempt is needed)

Schedule

• Day shift
• Minimum 12 hours per month
• Cannot exceed 20 hours per week

Program Goals

Banner's goal is for you to continue as a New Graduate RN in the same unit after you graduate and obtain your RN license. This extern position provides an opportunity to build your skill set and gain valuable clinical experience before becoming a licensed nurse.
