Nurse Extern

North Alabama Medical Center is seeking a Nurse Extern to provide direct patient care under the supervision of registered nurses. This role is ideal for nursing students who want to gain practical clinical experience in an acute care hospital setting while completing their nursing education.

Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively with the patient care team
• Perform direct patient care under the direction, delegation, and supervision of a registered nurse
• Document patient care provided
• Monitor, record, and communicate patient condition to the supervising RN as appropriate
• Maintain positive professional relationships with patients, families, coworkers, and healthcare team members
• Assist patients with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation
• Collaborate across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including patient transfer, discharge, referral, and spiritual or psychosocial support needs
• Evaluate learning needs of patients and families and provide education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances
• Advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of patients

Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a nursing program at a university or college
• BLS certification required or must be obtained within 2 weeks of start date
