Nurse Extern L, 6p-6a nights, intermediate care unit, EOW

This position offers nursing students the opportunity to gain clinical experience as a Nurse Extern in an intermediate care unit at Unity Health. Working the night shift (6p-6a), you will perform direct and indirect patient care duties under the guidance and supervision of RN and LPN staff, applying skills learned in your nursing coursework to real patient care scenarios.

Clinical Setting

You will work in an intermediate care unit providing care to patients with varying acuity levels. As duties progress, assignments will align with your nursing coursework development.

Responsibilities

Direct Patient Care

• Assist patients with personal hygiene and activities of daily living
• Observe and monitor patient conditions, including vital signs
• Monitor feeding and elimination patterns
• Assist licensed nurses with delegated patient care procedures
• Implement components of the plan of care related to comfort, safety, nutrition, fluid needs, and elimination
• Perform skilled procedures under the supervision of a licensed nurse

Indirect Patient Care

• Maintain clean, safe patient environments in occupied and unoccupied areas
• Assist with clerical tasks as assigned
• Order and maintain supplies
• Perform general housekeeping duties
• Ensure the environment is free of hazards

General Duties

• Follow all infection control and safety guidelines
• Adhere to Unity Health policies and procedures
• Support the organization's mission, vision, and values
• Perform computer entry as needed

Note: Medication administration is not permitted during the nursing coursework period.

Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited college of nursing LPN program
• Minimum enrollment in the first semester of nursing coursework
• Current BLS certification
• Nursing skills checklist completed by your nursing instructor documenting skills you can perform
• Recommendation from nursing faculty

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience as a nursing assistant

Schedule

Night shift: 6p-6a

Every other weekend (EOW)

This is a safety-sensitive position. Impaired performance could result in harm to patients, associates, or guests. Candidates actively engaged in the use of medical marijuana, even with a valid medical marijuana card, are not eligible for employment in this safety-sensitive position.

As a Student Nurse Extern, you will have no defined service commitment following graduation. (Note: Student Nurse Interns commit to one year of service after graduation and are eligible for RN bonuses upon certification.)
