Nurse Extern II - Nursing Internship

Join the Nurse Extern II program at CHRISTUS Health and gain valuable hospital experience while working alongside registered nurses. This internship is designed for nursing students who have completed their first hospital clinical rotation. You will rotate through different units, shadow front-line RNs, assist with direct patient care, and receive generous hourly compensation while learning in a real hospital setting.

This position is not available to students currently in Foundations or Fundamentals coursework. If you are in those courses, the Extern I application will open on October 2nd.

Start Date: December 14th

Responsibilities

• Identify and report life-threatening situations to the RN; initiate and assist with basic life support when needed
• Observe and promptly report unusual symptoms to the nurse, including abnormal vital signs, IV site redness, edema, and suspicious areas of skin breakdown
• Report patient and family-related problems, such as patient dissatisfaction with care routines or departure from activity restrictions
• Demonstrate working knowledge of aseptic and sterile technique; follow universal precautions
• Record patient information accurately and promptly; report changes in patient condition and vital signs
• Assist with laboratory specimen collection and delivery
• Use supplies and equipment appropriately and document use in the medical record
• Assist with various direct patient care activities under the supervision and direction of the registered nurse
• Follow hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and protocols
• Maintain compliance with timekeeping; accrue no unexcused absences and no more than three unscheduled absences
• Participate in 80% of prescribed in-service programs and departmental meetings; follow up on missed sessions
• Attend infection control and safety programs
• Follow necessary safety precautions and HIPAA guidelines to prevent unauthorized disclosure of protected health information
• Complete all required educational requirements in a timely manner

Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a nursing program pursuing either an associate degree or bachelor's degree to become a registered nurse
• Must have completed your first hospital clinical rotation and be in good standing in your nursing program
• Proficient in basic nursing tasks
• Provide updated transcript at the beginning of each semester
• AHA BLS certification required within 2 weeks of employment

Preferred Qualifications

• Six months of experience in patient care
