Job Description

Join St. Luke's Medical Center as a Nurse Extern II through the Best Fit Program, designed for Spring 2027 nursing graduates. This role offers a unique opportunity to rotate through three different Medical/Surgical specialty units while working under the supervision of Registered Nurses. Upon program completion, you and unit managers will discuss potential permanent placement offers, allowing you to choose the specialty unit that best aligns with your career goals. This position provides a seamless transition pathway from Nurse Extern II into an RN role.

Clinical Setting

You will work on Medical/Surgical units at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center, providing patient care under RN supervision across multiple specialty areas.

Responsibilities

  • Complete activities of daily living, vital sign monitoring, and blood glucose monitoring under RN observation
  • Collaborate with the Registered Nurse to establish individualized plans of care based on patient health, education, developmental needs, and patient/family preferences
  • Evaluate patient responses to interventions and communicate observations and patient needs to the Registered Nurse
  • Develop delegation skills appropriate to Health Unit Coordinators, Nursing Assistants, and technical roles
  • Administer medications as delegated by the Registered Nurse, with clinical judgment and skill proficiency evaluated prior to administration
  • Manage an increased patient load while applying time management principles
  • Collect and synthesize relevant patient data to accurately identify patient status and needs
  • Participate in emergency situations under appropriate RN supervision when you have demonstrated knowledge and skill
  • Perform patient positioning and transporting duties using proper technique
  • Demonstrate age-appropriate care knowledge and skills, including understanding growth and development principles across the lifespan

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in the final year of an accredited or approved nursing program, or graduate of an accredited nursing program
  • Successful completion of a Medical/Surgical course that includes pharmacological concepts
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to adapt to interruptions and changing priorities

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders during work shifts
  • Lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist
  • Lift up to 20 lbs. over the head
  • Carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance
  • Push/pull with 30 lbs. of force
  • Perform sliding transfers of 150 lbs. with a second person present
  • Use foot pedals on carts or machines
  • Functional vision and hearing
  • Exposure to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and radiation hazards as well as blood and body fluids on a continuous basis; protective clothing required

Schedule

  • Part-time position: 8 hours per week during regular weeks
  • First week requires 36-40 hours for orientation
  • One 8-hour shift per week on dayshift following orientation
  • Start date: January 4, 2027
  • Spots are limited

Compensation and Benefits

  • Pay range: $21.85 - $32.80 per hour
  • Benefits are not eligible for this part-time position
