The opportunity

Job Description

This is a temporary nursing extern position in the ICU at Uniontown Hospital, designed for nursing students to gain practical clinical experience. You will work co-assigned with a registered nurse, providing direct and indirect patient care under RN supervision in an intensive care setting.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the RN in providing direct patient care to promote patient comfort and facilitate diagnostic and treatment procedures
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living according to their needs and departmental procedures
  • Perform designated procedures following departmental guidelines
  • Accurately observe, record, and report patient concerns, symptoms, reactions, and progress to the RN in a timely manner
  • Assist the RN with examinations and procedures
  • Demonstrate competency in basic and intermediate care skills as verified by your nurse mentor, clinical preceptor, nurse manager, or nurse director
  • Perform skills independently or under direct RN supervision as identified on the skills inventory
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary, and safe environment to prevent and control infections and ensure patient, visitor, and employee safety
  • Thoroughly clean assigned patient care areas and unit equipment according to departmental procedures and schedules
  • May act as a sitter for patients as assigned by the charge RN
  • May have limited access to non-controlled medications during transport at the request of a licensed care provider
  • Attend staff meetings and unit in-services as applicable
  • Seek educational opportunities to increase competence and assist in peer education

Required Qualifications

  • Must be entering your final semester or year of a Diploma Program, Associate, or Baccalaureate RN program at an accredited School of Nursing
  • Obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire date

Physical Requirements

  • Capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking
  • Able to lift up to 40 pounds and push/pull heavy loads
  • Possess visual, auditory, and oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability

Schedule

  • 36 hours per week
  • Varied shifts
  • Non-exempt position
