Nurse Extern-ICU

Trinity Health Oakland is seeking a Contingent Nurse Extern to join the ICU - 2 South, a 30-bed mixed patient population unit including Adult Trauma, Neuro, Cardiothoracic, Surgical, and Medical ICU patients. This position offers nursing students hands-on clinical experience in a supportive, patient-centered environment while working alongside experienced Registered Nurses and interdisciplinary care teams.

As a Nurse Extern, you will provide direct patient care under RN supervision, apply clinical skills gained through your nursing program, and develop the clinical judgment necessary for a successful transition into professional nursing practice.

Responsibilities

• Partner with Registered Nurses to deliver high-quality, compassionate patient care
• Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, feeding, mobility, and personal care
• Monitor and report changes in patient condition to the RN promptly
• Support patient admissions, transfers, and discharge processes
• Assist with nutritional support, intake monitoring, and documentation
• Provide comfort measures while respecting each patient's dignity, values, cultural preferences, and individual needs
• Participate in patient and family education under RN supervision
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to support positive patient outcomes
• Participate in unit-based initiatives that promote patient safety, quality improvement, and employee engagement
• Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and commitment to continuous learning

Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled and in good standing at an accredited nursing program
• Must maintain active student status throughout employment
• Successfully completed at least two clinical nursing rotations, including one Medical-Surgical rotation
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Excellent customer service and patient-centered care mindset
• Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment
• Demonstrated adaptability and willingness to learn
• Ability to work collaboratively with patients, families, healthcare professionals, and support staff
• Commitment to providing compassionate, respectful, and culturally responsive care

Preferred Qualifications

• Enrollment in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program

Schedule

• Part-time, contingent position with a minimum commitment of 4 shifts per month, including weekend shifts
• Day Shift and Night Shift available
• Rotating shift schedule

Working Conditions

This position is performed in a patient care environment and may involve exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, and other healthcare-related hazards. The role requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling. Occasional kneeling, crouching, squatting, crawling, and balancing may be necessary. Frequent lifting, transferring, and moving of patients and equipment in accordance with safe patient handling practices is required.
