As a Nurse Extern I, you will work under the supervision of a Registered Nurse to provide direct patient care to hospitalized patients. This nursing internship position offers hands-on clinical experience in a hospital setting while you complete your nursing education or transition into professional practice.
Responsibilities
- Identify and report life-threatening situations to the RN; initiate and assist with basic life support when needed
- Observe and promptly report unusual symptoms to the nurse, including abnormal vital signs, IV site complications, and areas of skin breakdown
- Report patient and family-related problems, such as patient dissatisfaction with care routines or departures from activity restrictions
- Demonstrate working knowledge of aseptic and sterile technique; follow universal precautions
- Record patient information accurately and promptly; report changes in patient condition and vital signs
- Assist with laboratory specimen collection and delivery
- Use supplies and equipment appropriately and document use in the medical record
- Attend infection control and safety programs
- Follow all hospital and departmental policies, including dress code, personal hygiene, and safety precautions
- Comply with HIPAA guidelines to protect patient health information
- Maintain attendance standards with no unexcused absences and no more than three unscheduled absences
- Participate in at least 80% of prescribed in-service programs and departmental meetings
- Complete all required educational requirements
Required Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing, pursuing or having obtained an associate or bachelor's degree in nursing (RN)
- Must have completed first clinical and be in good standing in the nursing program
- If graduated from an accredited nursing program, must successfully complete the NCLEX exam within six months of graduation
- Proficient in basic nursing tasks
Licenses and Certifications
- AHA BLS certification required within two weeks of employment
Preferred Qualifications
- Six months of hospital experience
