Nurse Extern / Hillcrest Hospital Cushing

Hillcrest Hospital Cushing is enrolling nursing students for its 2026 Nurse Extern Program. This temporary position is available to nursing students who have completed at least 2 semesters of an RN program and offers hands-on clinical experience in a 99-bed community-owned hospital setting.

Hillcrest Hospital Cushing serves patients of all ages in the Cushing, Oklahoma area and offers 24-hour emergency services, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, diagnostic imaging, orthopedics, neurosurgery, urology, and inpatient behavioral health care for adults experiencing mental health crises.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the care of patients under the direction of an RN
• Perform duties of a nursing assistant and other technical skills learned in nursing education for which competency has been demonstrated under faculty supervision
• Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate patient care on the assigned unit
• Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development principles across the lifespan
• Assess patient data and interpret information to identify patient requirements relative to age-specific needs
• Participate in patient care as described in hospital policies and procedures
• Adhere to rules and regulations set forth by the Oklahoma Nursing Practice Act

Scope of Practice

As an unlicensed person with a defined job description, you will function under the direct responsibility of a registered nurse who must be physically present in the institution. The RN will not provide direct supervision for every activity but remains responsible for your work.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• Current completion of at least 2 semesters of an RN program
• Current BLS certification
• Any additional requirements specific to your assigned department

Preferred Qualifications

• Proficiency in nursing assistant care and nursing skills
• Strong oral communication abilities
• Ability to follow directions and perform work according to department standards under RN supervision
• Emotional maturity and ability to function effectively under stress
