This Nurse Extern position at Methodist Hospital is designed for nursing students to develop clinical skills and problem-solving techniques under the direct supervision of an experienced preceptor. You will work on a designated nursing unit, gaining hands-on experience in patient care while learning to apply current Standards of Care, the Nurse Practice Act, and hospital policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the performance of therapeutic procedures
- Observe and perform nursing care under the supervision of a nurse preceptor
- Implement the patient's plan of care in collaboration with all health care disciplines
- Assess, evaluate, interpret, and document the patient's physical and mental status under the supervision of a Registered Nurse
- Provide pertinent healthcare education to patients and their families
Required Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in good academic standing at an accredited School of Nursing, or a Nurse Graduate
- If currently enrolled, must have successfully completed Fundamentals/Foundations of Nursing (or equivalent) didactic and lab coursework
- Current school registration or proof of graduation required
- Good interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Ability to demonstrate diplomacy when interacting with patients, family members, visitors, and staff
- Ability to demonstrate flexibility in meeting unanticipated demands and priorities
- Ability to maintain a calm demeanor in crisis situations
- Ability to use the nursing process for approaching problems faced in the role
Additional Requirements
- Compliance with Standards of Behavior as outlined in Personnel Policy and Procedure #1, Employee Relations Code
- Knowledge of procedures for protecting and maintaining security, confidentiality, and integrity of employee, patient, family, organizational, and medical information
