The opportunity

Job Description

Meadville Medical Center is seeking a Nurse Extern for the Emergency Department on a per diem basis. In this role, you will assist Professional Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses with daily nursing unit operations, providing both direct and indirect patient care under supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care including admissions, transfers, and discharges
  • Assist with patient hygiene and activities of daily living
  • Answer call lights and respond to patient needs
  • Perform procedures as outlined in the Nursing Extern Skill Sheet
  • Assist Professional Nurses or LPNs with complicated treatment procedures
  • Document observations and care provided in a timely manner
  • Make frequent rounds of assigned units
  • Maintain equipment in a clean and safe manner
  • Provide age-appropriate patient care
  • Ensure patient comfort and safety
  • Follow established charge procedures for patient items
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and implement hospital and nursing department policies and procedures, including safety awareness and infection control
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Physical Demands

  • Medium work involving lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling 20-50 lbs occasionally and 10-25 lbs frequently
  • Stooping and bending occasionally
  • Reaching frequently
  • Handling and fingering frequently
  • Standing or walking for a large portion of work time
  • Near vision work frequently
  • Color vision required frequently

Working Conditions

  • Normal patient care environment with potential exposure to excessive noise, dust, and temperature changes
  • Subject to distasteful patient care activities
  • Exposure to communicable diseases
  • Potential exposure to chemical wastes, body wastes, fluids, and other infectious materials

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program
  • Current BLS Healthcare Provider card
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
