Nurse Extern - Emergency Department

Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center's Emergency Department is seeking a Nurse Extern to assist the nursing staff in providing patient care. This per diem position offers flexible weekend scheduling with 12-hour shifts (7a-7p) and is ideal for nursing students gaining clinical experience in a fast-paced emergency setting.

As a Nurse Extern, you will work under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, performing nursing assistant duties and delegated patient care activities. You will contribute to patient assessments, collect vital signs and specimens, assist with personal care, and help identify physical, psychosocial, age-specific, and cultural considerations for each patient.

Responsibilities

• Greet and orient new patients to the hospital environment
• Perform nursing assistant tasks under the supervision of a registered nurse
• Contribute to patient assessments by collecting data during physical assessments and health histories for RN review and co-signature
• Ensure documentation is accurate, complete, specific, and timely
• Assist nursing staff in identifying physical, psychosocial, age-specific, and cultural considerations for each patient
• Provide personal care according to organizational standards and policies
• Report abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions to nursing staff
• Collect specimens, vital signs, and other related patient data as delegated and supervised by an RN
• Administer medications by P.O., SQ, IM, topical, nasal, otic, optic, and inhaled routes under direct RN supervision and co-signature
• Assist with oxygen modality administration under direct RN supervision
• Assist with sterile dressing changes under direct RN supervision
• Demonstrate interpersonal competency in dealing with patients specific to the emergency department
• Assist with patient activity and mobility
• Assist with provision of nonpharmacological interventions

Required Qualifications

• Completion of first semester of nursing program
• Continued enrollment in nursing program required upon hire
• BLS certification as a Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider required within 90 days of employment
• No prior nursing experience required

Schedule

• Per Diem/PRN status (less than 40 hours per pay period)
• One weekend requirement
• 12-hour shifts, 7a-7p

Physical Demands

This position requires frequent standing, walking, lifting 0-25 lbs., carrying 0-25 lbs., pushing/pulling 0-25 lbs., bending/stooping, reaching, talking, hearing, repetitive hand/arm movements, and keyboard data entry. Occasional sitting, climbing, kneeling, crouching/crawling, and running are required. Depth perception, color distinction, and near and far vision are frequently needed. You may be exposed to hazardous drugs.
