Nurse Extern

Cape Fear Valley Medical Center is seeking a Nurse Extern to provide basic patient care support in our nursing unit. This role is ideal for nursing students who have completed their first semester in an accredited nursing program and are seeking clinical experience in a hospital setting.

As a Nurse Extern, you will work under the supervision of the nursing team to assist with patient care activities, maintain a safe and clean patient environment, and support the implementation of nursing care plans. This position offers valuable hands-on experience in a clinical setting while you continue your nursing education.

Responsibilities

• Assist with patient admissions, including orientation to the unit, hospital routines, and patient care equipment
• Respond to patient needs by reporting requests to appropriate nursing staff
• Assist with implementation of nursing care plans by performing delegated patient care tasks
• Maintain patient safety through proper use of equipment and supplies
• Retrieve patient care items and medications from supply rooms as directed
• Maintain a clean, well-stocked patient environment
• Participate in cost containment and accurate charging for patient services
• Participate in educational and performance improvement activities
• Support customer satisfaction, patient throughput, and hospital operations
• Perform additional Nursing Assistant II clinical skills as approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing after completing required continuing education and competency validation

Clinical Setting

Cape Fear Valley Medical Center is located in Fayetteville, North Carolina. You will work in the nursing unit with a multidisciplinary team.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Current registration with the NC Board of Nursing as Nursing Assistant I
• Successful completion of the first semester in an accredited school of nursing
• Demonstrated competency in basic nursing practice and use of the nursing process
• Excellent guest relations and communication skills, both verbal and written
• Ability to accept supervision from a multidisciplinary team
• Flexibility in approach to work tasks and schedules
• Ability to learn new skills and techniques quickly
• Basic knowledge of age-specific patient considerations
• Basic computer skills

Licenses and Certifications

• CNA certification through the NC Nursing Assistant Registry

Physical Requirements

• Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting
• Visual and auditory acuity for observing patients
• Potential exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials through skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact
