Nurse Extern

Cape Fear Valley Medical Center is seeking a Nurse Extern to provide basic patient care support in a hospital setting. This role is ideal for nursing students who have completed their first semester in an accredited nursing program and are ready to gain clinical experience while working under supervision.

As a Nurse Extern, you will assist the nursing team in delivering patient-centered care by observing patient conditions, responding to patient needs, and performing delegated patient care tasks. You will support the implementation of nursing care plans and help maintain a safe, clean, and well-stocked patient environment.

Responsibilities

• Assist in admitting patients to the unit, including orientation to unit routines and patient care equipment
• Respond to patient needs by reporting to the appropriate nursing staff
• Assist with implementing the nursing plan of care through delegated patient care tasks
• Help maintain patient safety through proper use of equipment and supplies
• Access medication and supply rooms to retrieve patient care items as needed
• Maintain a clean, well-stocked patient environment
• Participate in cost containment and accurate charging for patient services
• Participate in educational and performance improvement activities
• Support customer satisfaction, patient throughput, and hospital operations
• May perform additional Nursing Assistant II clinical skills after completing continuing education and competency validation as approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Current registration with the NC Board of Nursing as Nursing Assistant I
• Successful completion of the first semester in an accredited school of nursing
• Demonstrated competency in basic nursing practice and use of the nursing process
• Excellent guest relations and communication skills (verbal and written)
• Ability to accept supervision from a multidisciplinary team
• Flexibility in approach to work tasks and schedules
• Ability to learn new skills and techniques quickly
• Basic knowledge of age-specific patient considerations
• Basic computer skills

• CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) - NC Nursing Assistant Registry
