The opportunity

Job Description

Join UT Health East Texas as a Nurse Extern in a variable shift, PRN position. This role offers an excellent opportunity for nursing students to gain hands-on clinical experience while completing their nursing education. You will work under the direct supervision of registered nurses at UT Health Tyler, the flagship hospital of the system, which serves hundreds of thousands of patients annually.

UT Health Tyler is a comprehensive acute care facility featuring a Level 1 trauma center, comprehensive stroke center, the region's only ECMO program, and a Level III NICU. The medical staff includes more than 500 physicians and a full complement of subspecialty groups.

Responsibilities

  • Perform nursing functions as authorized under the direct supervision of a registered nurse
  • Provide basic nursing tasks including direct patient care
  • Report patient conditions and circumstances to supervising nurses
  • Maintain equipment and unit cleanliness
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care on your assigned unit

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program with anticipated completion within 24 months from date of hire
  • In academic good standing in your accredited nursing program
  • Completion of Medical Technology and Anatomy and Physiology coursework
  • BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care

Schedule and Working Conditions

  • Variable shift, PRN employment
  • May be required to work irregular schedules
  • Potential exposure to hazardous materials and situations including blood-borne pathogens, ionizing radiation, and communicable diseases
