Nurse Extern - Adut ED - PRN - Augusta, GA

Wellstar Health System is seeking a Nurse Extern to support licensed nursing staff in providing care to patients in the Adult Emergency Department. This is a PRN (as-needed) position located in Augusta, GA.

As a Nurse Extern, you will work under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, assisting with a variety of basic to intermediate level nursing care activities. You will work directly with a nursing preceptor and help manage their patient load, contributing to patient comfort, safety, and the overall plan of care.

Responsibilities

Under supervision, you will perform:

• Vital signs monitoring
• AM/PM care
• Intake and output measurement
• Tube feedings (bolus, gravity, and pump)
• Simple dressing changes
• Post mortem care
• Pin care for orthopedic patients
• Ostomy care
• Discontinuing indwelling urinary catheters
• Urine collection
• Phlebotomy
• Capillary blood glucose monitoring
• Specimen collection
• Finger and heel sticks as directed by a registered nurse
• Tracheostomy care (unit dependent)
• Discontinuing peripheral intravenous lines (unit dependent)
• In-line suctioning of ventilator patients (unit dependent)
• Proper labeling and delivery of laboratory specimens to appropriate departments
• Coordination of unit activities to ensure efficient patient care
• Running supplies and specimens between pharmacy, pathology, and x-ray
• Safe patient transportation to ancillary departments using hand-off communication
• Prompt and appropriate response to emergency situations
• Reporting pertinent patient and family information to the appropriate nurse

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Completion of Nursing Fundamentals
• Active enrollment in an ADN or BSN program
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire (BLS-I Instructor, BLS, or ARC-BLS American Red Cross Basic Life Support)
