Trinity Health Oakland is seeking a Nurse Extern for 6 South Neuro, a 497-bed community teaching hospital and level II trauma center. This part-time position offers an opportunity to gain clinical experience in a supportive environment while completing your nursing education.

As a Nurse Extern, you will function as a collaborative member of the healthcare team under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. You will provide basic direct patient care using principles of Relationship-based Care, perform activities of daily living appropriate to patients' conditions, assist with admissions, and support the interdisciplinary care team.

Schedule

  • 12-hour day shift
  • Part-time employment
  • Working weekends and holidays is necessary to meet staffing needs
  • Work in other units and on different shifts may be assigned as necessary to meet staffing requirements
  • Assigned hours, starting time, or days of work are subject to change based on departmental and organizational needs

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic bedside care and selected procedures under RN direction and supervision
  • Provide individualized care consistent with the plan of care
  • Perform activities of daily living appropriate to the patient's condition
  • Provide basic nutritional support such as bed setup, assistance with feeding, and documentation of intake and calorie count
  • Report changes in patient condition to the RN in a timely manner
  • Assist with the admission process by collecting assessment data, applying necessary equipment, and informing patients and families of unit routines
  • Provide patient care that reflects respect for patients' rights, dignity, values, cultural preferences, and expressed needs
  • Seek feedback from Clinical Leaders and RNs to identify clinical improvement opportunities
  • Participate in unit-based committees and initiatives that promote patient and workplace safety
  • Maintain appropriate skill level through completion of required hospital and unit-based education
  • Demonstrate commitment to Trinity Health's mission and values

Required Qualifications

Working Conditions

  • Working in the patient care environment may result in exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, and hazardous substances
  • In a typical day: sitting 25%, standing 25%, walking 50%
  • Occasional squatting, crawling, crouching, kneeling, and balancing (5-10% of work time)
  • Frequent bending/stooping and reaching above shoulder level
  • Frequent pushing/pulling
  • Use of hands for simple and firm grasping and fine manipulating
  • Frequent lifting and carrying of patients, equipment, and other items not to exceed 51 pounds (associates will not lift items/patients exceeding 35 pounds from the floor)
