Trinity Health Oakland, a 497-bed community teaching hospital and level II trauma center, is seeking a Nurse Extern for 6 South Neuro. This part-time position offers an opportunity to gain clinical experience in a neurology unit while completing your nursing education.

As a Nurse Extern, you will function as a collaborative member of the healthcare team under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. You will apply principles of Relationship-based Care to provide direct patient care to assigned patients and support the activities of the unit-based shared governance council.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic bedside care and selected procedures under RN direction and supervision
  • Provide activities of daily living (ADLs) appropriate to patients' conditions
  • Provide individualized care consistent with the plan of care under RN direction
  • Assist with patient admission processes, including collecting assessment data and applying necessary equipment
  • Provide basic nutritional support such as bed setup, assistance with feeding, and documentation of intake and calorie counts
  • Report changes in patient condition to the RN in a timely manner
  • Perform patient education activities to meet educational needs of patients and families under RN direction
  • Provide care that respects patients' rights, dignity, values, cultural preferences, and expressed needs
  • Seek feedback for performance improvement and participate in self-appraisal
  • Participate in unit-based committees and initiatives that promote patient and workplace safety
  • Maintain skills and competence through seeking out clinical experiences
  • Complete required hospital and unit-based education offerings
  • Demonstrate commitment to Trinity Health's mission and values
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on unit, patient type, and care needs

Schedule

  • 12-hour day shift
  • Part-time position
  • Working weekends and holidays is necessary to meet staffing needs
  • Work in other units and on different shifts may be assigned as necessary
  • Assigned hours, starting time, and days of work are subject to change based on departmental and organizational needs

Required Qualifications

  • Currently attending and in good standing at an accredited school of nursing
  • Enrollment in a bachelor's program is preferred
  • Must maintain continuous active student status
  • Must have successfully completed two clinical nursing rotations, with at least one Medical/Surgical rotation
  • Current BCLS (Basic Life Support Certification) certification

Working Conditions

  • Working in the patient care environment may result in exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, and hazardous substances
  • In a typical day: sitting 25%, standing 25%, walking 50%
  • Occasional squatting, crawling, crouching, kneeling, and balancing (5-10% of work time)
  • Frequent bending/stooping and reaching above shoulder level
  • Frequent pushing/pulling
  • Use of hands for simple and firm grasping and fine manipulating
  • Frequent lifting and carrying of patients, equipment, and other items not to exceed 51 pounds (associates will not lift items/patients exceeding 35 pounds from the floor)
