Nurse Extern | 5E- Neuro Stroke

As a Nurse Extern on the 5E Neuro Stroke unit, you will work under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse to develop foundational patient care skills in a specialized neurological and stroke care setting. You will support the nursing team in delivering safe, high-quality, age-appropriate care while assisting with patient throughput activities including transport, admissions, discharges, and other workflow needs.

Responsibilities

• Support patients with activities of daily living including bathing, grooming, toileting, dressing, and other essential personal care needs while maintaining dignity, comfort, and safety
• Assist patients with mobility and hygiene needs by repositioning, transferring, ambulating, and utilizing assistive devices according to established procedures and RN direction
• Obtain and document routine clinical measurements including vital signs, height, weight, and intake/output, and promptly report abnormalities or notable changes to the RN
• Support patient nutrition and hydration by assisting with feeding, meal setup, and monitoring diet tolerance in alignment with prescribed diet orders and RN guidance
• Maintain a clean and safe patient environment by ensuring patient rooms, equipment, and common areas meet infection prevention standards and remain free from hazards
• Observe and communicate changes in patient condition by identifying physical, emotional, or behavioral variations and providing timely, factual reports to the RN
• Reinforce patient and family education and orientation by reviewing safety measures, explaining unit routines, and assisting in preparing patients for tests or procedures as directed by the RN
• Perform clerical and administrative support functions including answering phones, entering basic information into the electronic medical record, retrieving supplies, and supporting communication flow on the unit
• Manage patient-care supplies and equipment by stocking inventory, ensuring materials are available, and maintaining cleanliness and proper functioning of designated equipment
• Perform competency-validated technical skills such as 12-lead electrocardiograms, routine venipuncture, and specimen collection as permitted by organizational policy and Georgia practice guidelines, strictly under RN supervision and only after documented competency validation

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
• Active enrollment in a recognized accredited nursing program (Associate-level or Bachelor-level) and maintenance of good academic standing
• Minimum 2.5 Grade Point Average (GPA) on a weighted 4.0 scale, calculated across all coursework including advanced classes where applicable
• Successful completion of foundational nursing coursework prior to the onboarding date, including but not limited to: Foundations of Professional Nursing, Physical Assessment and Health, Fundamental Principles and Skills, and Pathophysiology/Pharmacology, or equivalent courses as defined by your accredited nursing program
• Ability to complete all required orientation, training, and competency validation programs upon hire, including RN-supported instruction for designated skills and procedures
• Demonstrated competency in basic fundamentals of nursing as acquired through accredited nursing coursework
• Ability to maintain academic performance standards required for continued good standing in your nursing program

Education and Verification

Verification of completion or anticipated completion of required foundational nursing coursework prior to the onboarding date must be confirmed through acceptable documentation such as official or unofficial academic transcripts, written confirmation from your School of Nursing, progression letters, or other formal academic documentation. If official transcripts cannot be provided, acceptable alternative documentation may be approved by the Nurse Director, Nursing Education Department, or Human Resources Business Partner.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

This role requires the ability to perform essential physical functions associated with direct patient care. You must be able to stand and walk for prolonged periods and frequently bend, reach, squat, kneel, and move between positions efficiently to meet clinical workflow demands. The position requires sufficient strength and mobility to assist with patient transfers, repositioning, and movement of equipment or supplies while maintaining proper body mechanics. Lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling tasks may range from light to moderately heavy, and reasonable accommodations may be made in accordance with applicable law.

You must possess adequate near and far visual acuity, hearing, fine motor coordination, and tactile sensitivity necessary to safely observe patients, recognize alarms and call signals, handle equipment, and perform assigned clinical support activities. The role requires the ability to respond promptly and appropriately to changes in patient condition, prioritize multiple tasks, and remain composed and effective in high-stress or emergency situations.

Work is performed in a clinical environment where you may be exposed to blood, bodily fluids, communicable diseases, noxious odors, high noise levels, and frequent interruptions. Extended use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including masks, gloves, and gowns, may be required. You must be able to function safely and effectively under these conditions while maintaining professional behavior. Flexibility in work hours, including the ability to work weekends, holidays, or varied shifts, may be required to support patient care operations.

Orientation and Application Timeline

Applications will be accepted beginning August 21, 2026. Orientation begins December 14, 2026 and requires attendance for the entire week.

Preferred Qualifications

• Completion of additional nursing coursework beyond foundational requirements
• Previous experience in healthcare, patient care, or customer service setting
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association
• Familiarity with electronic medical record (EMR) systems
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
• Demonstrated interest in developing clinical skills within a hospital or acute care setting
