This is a temporary nursing extern position for students in their final semester or year of an accredited RN program (Diploma, Associate, or Baccalaureate). You will work on the 2 East Medical/Surgical unit at Uniontown Hospital, co-assigned with a registered nurse, providing direct and indirect patient care under RN supervision.
Clinical Setting
You will practice in a medical/surgical nursing environment, gaining hands-on experience across all nursing areas while working alongside experienced RN mentors and clinical preceptors.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care to promote patient comfort and facilitate diagnostic and treatment procedures as outlined in the nursing care plan
- Assist the RN with patients' activities of daily living according to patient needs and departmental procedures
- Perform designated procedures following departmental guidelines
- Accurately observe, record, and report patient concerns, symptoms, reactions, and progress to the RN in a timely manner
- Assist the RN with examinations and procedures according to departmental procedures
- Demonstrate competency in basic and intermediate care skills as verified by your nurse mentor, clinical preceptor, nurse manager, and/or nurse director
- Perform skills independently or under direct RN supervision as identified on the skills inventory
- Participate in staff meetings and unit in-services as applicable
- Maintain a clean, sanitary, and safe environment to prevent and control infections and ensure safety of patients, visitors, and employees
- Thoroughly clean assigned patient care areas and unit equipment according to departmental procedures and schedules
- Keep hallways and work areas free of equipment according to departmental procedures
- May act as a sitter for patients as assigned by the charge RN
- May have limited access to non-controlled substances during transport at the request of a licensed care provider
- Seek educational opportunities to increase competence and assist in peer education
Required Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in the final semester or year of a Diploma, Associate, or Baccalaureate RN program at an accredited School of Nursing
- Obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire date
Physical Requirements
- Capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking
- Able to lift up to 40 pounds and push/pull heavy loads
- Possess visual, auditory, and oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability
Schedule
- 36 hours per week
- Non-exempt position
