This is a temporary nursing extern position for students in their final semester or year of an accredited RN program (Diploma, Associate, or Baccalaureate). You will work on 1 West Ortho/Med Surg, co-assigned with a registered nurse, providing direct and indirect patient care under RN supervision.
Responsibilities
- Assist the RN in providing direct patient care to promote patient comfort and facilitate diagnostic and treatment procedures as outlined in the nursing care plan
- Assist with patients' activities of daily living according to their needs in a timely manner, following departmental procedures
- Perform designated procedures as needed following departmental procedure
- Accurately observe, record, and report to the RN all patient concerns, symptoms, reactions, and progress in a timely manner
- Assist the RN with examinations and procedures according to departmental procedure
- Demonstrate competency in basic and intermediate care skills as verified by nurse mentor, clinical preceptor, nurse manager, and/or nurse director
- Demonstrate competency in skills identified on the skills inventory that may be carried out independently or under direct RN supervision
- Educate yourself effectively and assist in peer education; seek educational opportunities to increase competence
- Attend staff meetings and unit in-services as applicable
- Assist the RN with indirect care by maintaining a clean, sanitary, and safe environment to prevent and control infections and provide safety for patients, visitors, and employees
- Thoroughly clean assigned patient care areas according to departmental procedure
- Thoroughly clean assigned unit equipment according to schedule and/or need; keep hallway and work areas free of equipment according to departmental procedure
- May act as a sitter for a patient as assigned by the charge RN
- May have limited access to medication including during transport of non-controlled substances at the request of a licensed care provider
Required Qualifications
- Entering final semester or year of Diploma Program, Associate, or Baccalaureate RN program at an accredited School of Nursing
- Obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire date
Physical Requirements
- Capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking
- Able to lift up to 40 pounds and push/pull heavy loads
- Possess visual, auditory, and oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability
Schedule
- 36 hours per week
