New Graduate Registered Nurse (RN) – Neurological Progressive Care Unit

Join the Neurological Progressive Care Unit (9B) at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center as a New Graduate Registered Nurse. This high-acuity, fast-paced progressive care unit supports the Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit and provides specialized care for complex neurological and neurosurgical patients in a dynamic environment that fosters continuous professional growth.

Clinical Setting

The 9B unit is a 36-bed progressive care unit at Carolinas Medical Center, a Level 1 Trauma center and Magnet-designated hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. The unit is staffed with highly skilled, compassionate nurses who deliver exceptional clinical care during patients' most challenging moments. Staffing ratios are thoughtfully adjusted to meet patient acuity needs, with ideal nurse-to-patient assignments of 1:3, and 1:2 for highest-acuity patients.

Patient Populations and Clinical Focus

You will provide specialized care for a wide range of neurological and neurosurgical patients, including:

• Post-operative craniotomy patients
• Pituitary tumor resection patients
• Post-operative deep brain stimulator (DBS) patients
• Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak repair patients in collaboration with ENT surgeons
• Subdural hematomas, including patients undergoing bedside twist drill procedures, burr holes, and craniotomies with hematoma evacuation
• Seizure and epilepsy patients and associated procedures
• Subarachnoid hemorrhage patients
• Post-operative spinal surgery patients requiring progressive care-level monitoring
• Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts and external ventricular drains (EVDs)
• Subdural drains and lumbar drains
• Ischemic stroke patients at high risk for hemorrhagic conversion
• Hemorrhagic stroke patients requiring progressive care-level monitoring
• Neuromuscular diseases including Myasthenia Gravis, Guillain-Barré, and Multiple Sclerosis
• CNS infections
• NSICU patients transitioning to progressive care status

Responsibilities

• Provide and coordinate comprehensive patient care through the nursing process to deliver safe, therapeutic care in accordance with established standards, policies, and procedures
• Manage advanced respiratory care, including tracheostomy care, BiPAP, and high-flow nasal cannula (OptiFlow)
• Manage intravenous infusion therapy, including cardiac drips, nicardipine (Cardene), and heparin
• Use evidence-based practice and clinical decision-making to create the safest patient environment
• Lead efforts to deliver the best patient experience across the continuum of care
• Communicate compassionately and skillfully with patients and families

Required Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited or approved program in nursing
• Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which you practice
• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association
• Current authorization to work in the United States on a full-time basis (Atrium Health is currently unable to provide employment visa sponsorship for this role)

Schedule

• Full-time position, 36 hours per week
• 3, 12-hour night shifts per week
• Holiday and weekend rotation required

Compensation and Benefits

• Pay range: $38.20 - $57.30 per hour
• Base compensation within the range based on qualifications, skills, relevant experience, and training
• Premium pay for shift differentials and on-call duties
• Sign-on bonus available to applicants who have not received a sign-on bonus from the company for another role within the past 24 months
