The opportunity

Job Description

Join our Clinical Decision Unit as a Registered Nurse in a rotating position. This role offers a career pathway with three clinical levels (Clinical Nurse I, II, and III), allowing you to grow from a new graduate through experienced practitioner roles. You will provide direct, age-specific patient care in an acute care setting, working collaboratively with an interdisciplinary healthcare team to prevent illness, maintain wellness, and provide comfort to patients and families.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver and accurately document direct, age-specific care to patients or groups of patients based on medical orders and integrated multidisciplinary plans of care
  • Safely administer prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and interactions
  • Assist the healthcare team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort
  • Recognize and anticipate changes in patient situations and intervene appropriately
  • Organize work and delegate and supervise others (RNs, LPNs, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries) in carrying out assignments
  • Provide direction and education at the unit level
  • Practice within Virginia nursing regulations and ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing standards
  • Follow all VCUHS policies, procedures, and established practices

Clinical Levels and Experience Requirements

Clinical Nurse I (New Graduate)

  • No prior RN experience required
  • Integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet patient and family needs
  • Begins to acquire leadership skills at the unit level
  • Preferred: Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in acute care or applicable settings

Clinical Nurse II

  • Requires 12 to 24 months of RN experience
  • Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills applied to specific patient populations
  • Recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately
  • Mobilizes resources to meet individualized patient and family needs
  • Preferred: Academic healthcare experience; experience with similar patient populations in acute care or applicable settings

Clinical Nurse III

  • Requires 3 years of clinical experience
  • Demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level applied to specific patient populations
  • Anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately
  • Serves as a role model in clinical settings
  • Preferred: Academic healthcare experience; experience with similar patient populations in acute care or applicable settings; specialty area certification

Required Qualifications

  • Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible compact state
  • Diploma or Associate's Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and approved by Virginia's Board of Nursing
  • Current RN licensure in Virginia and AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent for continued employment

Education Requirements

  • All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) must enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of start date and complete the program within five years of start date, unless grandfathered under previous requirements
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or higher from an accredited program
  • Preferred for Clinical Nurse III: Certification in specialty area

Schedule and Shifts

  • Rotating shifts including all three shifts (day, evening, night)
  • Weekends and holidays required
  • Individual shift rotation and schedules established with your Nurse Manager/Practice Manager
  • Schedules and shift rotation requirements may be adjusted as necessary to meet unit needs

Physical Requirements

Compensation

  • Clinical Nurse I: $34.00 - $49.50 per hour
  • Clinical Nurse II: $34.65 - $51.97 per hour
  • Clinical Nurse III: $36.38 - $54.58 per hour
