New Graduate Registered Nurse (RN) - 9A Medicine/Oncology

Denver Health is recruiting a New Graduate Registered Nurse (RN) for the 9A Medicine/Oncology unit. This position is designed specifically for nurses transitioning from education to clinical practice, with comprehensive support through a 12-month Nurse Residency Program accredited with distinction by the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Clinical Setting

The 9A unit consists of two distinct areas: Med/Surgical Telemetry Medicine/Surgical Oncology (9 East) and Telemetry Medicine (9 West). On 9 East, nurses obtain an Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy Provider credential and administer chemotherapy to inpatients. The unit emphasizes innovation and developing new processes to allow staff to work at the highest level of licensure and certification. On 9 West, nurses care for high-acuity medical patients using protocols developed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The unit is recognized as a pipeline to critical care, the Emergency Department, and other hospital departments due to the specialized skills developed here. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5, with a CNA-to-patient ratio of 1:12 most days.

Nurse Residency Program

The 12-month Nurse Residency Program provides monthly education classes and hands-on clinical experiences designed to ease your transition from student to practicing professional nurse. The program builds on knowledge and skills acquired in nursing education and is accredited with distinction from ANCC.

Responsibilities

• Assess the needs of individuals, families, and communities to identify potential health or safety problems
• Monitor, record, and report symptoms and changes in patient condition and vital signs
• Develop and modify patient care plans as indicated by patient responses and conditions
• Prepare patients for and assist with examinations and treatments
• Consult and coordinate with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care
• Monitor all aspects of patient care, including diet and physical activity
• Direct and supervise less skilled nursing and healthcare personnel
• Instruct individuals and families on health education, disease prevention, and aftercare
• Administer nursing care to ill, injured, convalescent, or disabled patients
• Administer medications, document, and reassess patient response
• Maintain accurate, detailed reports and records
• Promote positive patient experience

Required Qualifications

• Associate's Degree in Nursing
• Active RN license from the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA)
• BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
• Completion of clinical competency standards
• Knowledge of professional nursing practice standards and accrediting body standards
• Ability to assess patient data and interpret cultural information appropriately
• Ability to use medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public
• Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
• Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures
• Clear communication skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with EPIC documentation system

Compensation and Benefits

• Salary: $36.00 - $57.77 per hour
