Job Description

Join Rochester Regional Health's Adult Emergency Department Nurse Fellowship Program at Rochester General Hospital, a cohort-based program designed exclusively for recent nursing graduates. This fellowship provides comprehensive training in one of the busiest emergency departments in New York State outside of New York City, offering you the opportunity to experience a fast-paced clinical environment while determining if emergency nursing is right for you.

Clinical Setting

You will work in the Adult Emergency Department at Rochester General Hospital, one of the region's highest-volume EDs. The fellowship includes rotations across the Emergency Department, Cardiac, Critical Care, and Medical-Surgical units to develop a broad nursing skillset.

Program Features

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care by completing the nursing process and collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary team members
  • Perform various treatment procedures and provide physical, educational, and emotional support to patients, families, and friends
  • Develop and document individualized care plans customized to each patient's unique needs with support from the interdisciplinary health team
  • Maintain effective communication to convey patient health status, treatment plans, and progress
  • Demonstrate proficient use of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) for accurate patient and provider documentation and communication
  • Supervise assigned team members as appropriate
  • Adhere to required department and system protocols, regulations (local, state, and federal), and education requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Diploma or Associate's Degree in Nursing
  • Registered Nurse license in New York State
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing

Schedule and Shifts

  • 40 hours per week
  • Day/Evening and Evening/Night shifts available based on unit requirements
  • Every other weekend rotation

Physical Requirements

This is a moderate clinical role requiring continual movement, including standing, walking, and lifting 20–50 lbs., along with pushing and pulling medical equipment and assisting with patient positioning. You will perform frequent bending, twisting, and reaching while completing fine motor tasks in busy or confined clinical environments. High sensory acuity is essential for monitoring patient status and responding to alarms or safety concerns. Emotional and cognitive demands are substantial, involving decision-making under pressure, responding to emergencies, and maintaining sustained focus. Environmental exposures include infectious agents, bodily fluids, chemicals, and radiation. TB testing, mask-fit testing, and physical exams are common requirements. Reasonable accommodations will be considered for any physical requirements reported by a prospective employee or their physician.

Compensation

  • Base pay range: $39.75 - $52.99 per hour
  • Pay is determined by factors including experience, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts
  • Eligible for additional pay components
