The opportunity

Job Description

University of Utah Health is seeking a Medical Assistant II to provide assistive care and support in the Operating Room. This full-time position facilitates efficient patient care delivery, supports licensed staff in rendering basic healthcare, and assists with clerical functions as a multi-skilled auxiliary worker. You will provide direct patient care and may be required to access and administer medications within your scope of practice and according to state law.

Clinical Setting

University of Utah Health is a Level 1 Trauma Center nationally ranked for academic research, quality standards, and patient experience. The health system includes five hospitals and eleven clinics providing comprehensive services and medical advancement.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to clinic procedures, including recording vital signs and responses to standardized medical history questions
  • Report all observed patient concerns and changes in condition to licensed staff members
  • Perform Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Waved Lab tests as identified by department and report results to appropriate personnel
  • Perform additional skills such as suture removal, straight catheterization, and injections (IM, Subq, and intra-dermal)
  • Act as a chaperone for healthcare providers during patient examination and assist with procedures
  • Monitor and clean assigned patient examination rooms, unit areas, and unit equipment; report outdated supplies, stock levels, and necessary equipment repairs
  • Answer telephones, forward telephone messages, and schedule appointments, procedures, and diagnostic tests under the direction of licensed staff
  • Assist with routine clerical functions including filing medical information, locating and compiling department charts, obtaining medical records from other providers, and entering charges for billing purposes
  • Attend and complete mandatory education including infection prevention and control, safety, CPR, equipment usage, and procedures according to hospital and department policies
  • Perform patient phlebotomy in accordance with clinic procedures and physician orders after specialized training
  • Apply leads and monitor for diagnostic procedures such as EKG and ultrasound scan under direct supervision of licensed personnel
  • Assist with inpatient and family education by providing educational material and general health information
  • Assist with transportation of patients to ancillary departments or inpatient units as directed by licensed staff
  • Instruct in Basic Life Support (BLS) requirements
  • Perform IV access
  • Perform other duties based on department assignment

Schedule

This position requires rotating schedules with variable hours, including weekends, nights, and holidays to meet the staffing and patient care demands of a 24/7 complex health system. Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance during assigned shifts is considered an essential function of the role.

Required Qualifications

Verifiable completion of one of the following:

  • State approved EMT course
  • One year of Medical Assistant experience in an ambulatory care clinic or other healthcare setting
  • Medical Assisting education program
  • University Hospital Medical Assistant certification program

Licenses and Certifications

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system, to be obtained within 30 days of hire
  • Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department

Physical Requirements

This position involves intermediate working conditions in a healthcare setting. You must be able to:

  • Exert up to 50 pounds of force
  • Consistently lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move patients or objects such as medical equipment while providing patient care
  • Stand and walk for long periods of time
  • Reach for and handle equipment
  • Listen and communicate effectively

You may be exposed to infectious diseases, function around prisoners or behavioral health patients, and face exposure to potentially dangerous contaminated bodily fluids, blood, used needles, and other contaminants as part of the daily hazards of the job.

Additional Information

The hiring department is responsible for assessing new employee skills, identifying gaps, and coordinating further education. Specialty skills may not be performed until after the new hire completes basic competency testing. Demonstrated proficiency in the specific clinic's specialty skills is expected within six weeks of hire.
