The opportunity

Job Description

This full-time position provides clinical and administrative support in a primary care or urgent care setting. As a Licensed Practical Nurse, you will work alongside physicians and registered nurses to deliver direct patient care, manage patient flow, and maintain accurate medical and financial records.

Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Perform vital signs assessment and patient triage based on subjective data
  • Document medications and drug allergies in patient records
  • Administer medications (PO, IM, Sub Q, ID) as delegated by the provider, verifying the five rights
  • Obtain IV access and provide plain fluid infusion
  • Collect and prepare specimens for reference lab testing, including venipuncture for adults and children
  • Perform point-of-service laboratory testing and quality control procedures
  • Perform electrocardiograms and assist with stress testing
  • Perform audiograms, pulmonary function testing, drug screen collections, and nebulizer treatments
  • Assist physicians during patient visits and with procedures such as laceration repair, wound dressings, sigmoidoscopies, and other minor procedures
  • Prepare patients, exam rooms, and equipment for examinations and procedures

Patient Registration and Discharge

  • Greet and register patients using appropriate software systems
  • Explain payment policies and insurance coverage prior to registration
  • Obtain insurance information and pre-certifications as applicable
  • Discharge patients from the facility
  • Document and tabulate charges and payments
  • Maintain accurate financial data on patient accounts
  • Communicate information to patients as directed by the provider
  • Instruct patients in necessary preparation for diagnostic and therapeutic regimens

Administrative and Support Functions

  • Schedule patient appointments as required
  • Transcribe orders accurately and legibly using knowledge of policy, procedures, and legal documentation standards
  • Manage billing, collections, refunds, and patient account communications
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records for daily summary logs including charges, payments, balances due, statistical reports, billing claims, daily deposit transactions, and equipment loan-outs
  • Answer telephones and furnish information according to policy
  • Retrieve, photocopy, and file medical records
  • Prepare, review, and process records to ensure completeness and accuracy
  • Distribute mail and interdepartmental correspondence
  • Function as a liaison between provider, patient, and staff to expedite patient flow, quality care, appointment scheduling, test scheduling, and referrals
  • Sort diagnostic test results by established parameters
  • Assist with ordering and maintenance of inventory
  • Obtain, maintain, and transport equipment, supplies, and specimens
  • Orient new staff to the LPN role

Required Qualifications

  • Active Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (must be obtained within 30 days of hire)
  • Completion of a pharmacology course
  • Post-high school diploma or certificate program

Schedule

  • Full-time regular position (1.0 FTE)
  • Day shift
  • Various shift work and on-call situations may be required
