This is a contract, on-site position in a dynamic medical practice offering the opportunity to provide essential patient care as part of a specialized cardiothoracic surgery team. You will contribute directly to patient outcomes before, during, and after complex cardiac and thoracic procedures, collaborating closely with surgeons, physicians, and nursing staff to ensure comprehensive and continuous care. The role requires a committed professional ready to step into a fast-paced clinical setting and make an immediate impact.
Clinical Setting
You will work in a 16-bed ICU within a medical practice specializing in cardiothoracic surgery. As an APP, you will be responsible only for the surgical aspects of ICU care, managing a daily census of 3-6 patients plus consults.
Responsibilities
- Assist cardiothoracic surgeons in the operating room during complex surgical procedures
- Perform pre-operative patient assessments, including history taking and physical examinations
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests such as EKGs, chest X-rays, and lab work
- Provide post-operative care, including managing drains, monitoring vital signs, and adjusting treatment plans
- Conduct daily patient rounds in the ICU and on the surgical floor
- Document patient care accurately and comprehensively in the electronic medical record (EMR)
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop and implement patient care plans
- Educate patients and their families on surgical procedures, recovery processes, and health management
- Participate in on-call rotations and handle urgent clinical issues as they arise
- Ensure compliance with all hospital policies, protocols, and safety standards
Required Qualifications
- Current and unrestricted licensure as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) in Massachusetts
- Board certification as an NP (e.g., ACNP, AGACNP) or PA-C
- Associate level experience in a cardiothoracic surgery setting
- Proven experience in first-assisting in cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures
- Ability to perform advanced clinical assessments and manage complex post-operative care
- Proficiency in interpreting diagnostic tests relevant to cardiothoracic patients
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective team collaboration and patient interaction
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities in high-pressure situations
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, on-site clinical environment
- Valid DEA license and ability to obtain hospital privileges in Worcester
