Jefferson County Department of Health is hiring a Licensed Practical Nurse to provide prescribed medical treatment and personal care to patients in hospital, nursing home, and clinic settings. You will work under the supervision of professional nurses and physicians, performing clinical duties and assisting with various medical procedures.

Clinical Setting

You will work primarily within medical and healthcare facilities operated by Jefferson County Department of Health. Work involves use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and copiers, as well as medical tools and equipment necessary for patient care and diagnosis. You may be exposed to contagious or infectious diseases, bio-hazardous materials, and bodily fluids.

Responsibilities

  • Assist physicians, nurses, and other medical personnel with procedures such as lumbar punctures and biopsies
  • Conduct patient interviews to obtain health history data, insurance information, and chief complaint; assemble new patient and discharge charts
  • Review charts, update information, and document medications, diets, and other clinical data
  • Take and record vital signs including pulse, height, weight, respiration, and blood pressure
  • Administer medications and give injections such as immunization shots and antibiotics
  • Perform tuberculosis skin tests, vision tests, hearing tests, and pregnancy tests
  • Collect sputum, urine, and blood samples for laboratory testing; assist in obtaining cultures and smears
  • Monitor, record, and report changes in patient symptoms and condition
  • Add premixed intravenous fluids as qualified and according to nursing service policy
  • Perform cardiac monitoring observation and monitor patients receiving blood and blood products
  • Test urine for sugar, acetone, and specific gravity
  • Measure and record gastric and urine drainage
  • Perform designated laboratory tests in clinics
  • Perform techniques requiring surgical asepsis such as suctioning, sterile dressings, and wound irrigations
  • Enroll patients into clinic programs and assess needs and eligibility for health care services
  • Issue eligibility documents, schedule appointments, and assist with admissions, transfers, and discharges
  • Assist in daily disinfection of patient care areas and cleaning and disinfecting instruments after use
  • Maintain supplies as needed for patient care activities

Physical Demands

This position primarily involves light physical activity such as walking or standing for sustained periods. Occasional moderate physical exertion is required for lifting, stooping, or carrying. You may occasionally lift items or objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Required Qualifications

  • Active Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license from the Alabama Board of Nursing

Note: Applicants licensed in states other than Alabama must obtain an Alabama license within 90 days of employment.

Employment Type
