The Rhode Island Veterans Home seeks a Licensed Practical Nurse to provide direct patient care and treatment under the supervision of physicians and registered professional nurses. This position is based at the Rhode Island Veterans Home and involves caring for the veteran patient population in a long-term care setting.
Clinical Setting
You will work within the Rhode Island Veterans Home, a state healthcare facility operated by the Department of Human Services, Healthcare Licensed Nurses Division.
Responsibilities
- Perform practical nursing duties involving the care and treatment of patients under close technical direction of a physician or close supervision of a registered professional nurse
- Make regular rounds of wards individually or with a staff physician or registered professional nurse
- Administer intramuscular and subcutaneous injections and other medications and treatments according to specific directions from a physician or registered nurse
- Make and apply surgical dressings
- Administer narcotics and maintain records under the direction and close supervision of a physician or registered professional nurse
- Set up and assist in operating special apparatus and equipment
- Take and record temperature, pulse, and respiration
- Maintain bedside charts
- Assist at physical examinations and prepare patients for special examinations and tests as directed
- Assist in medical or rehabilitation treatment provided by a physical therapy program
- Provide tub and bed baths, morning and evening care, and personal hygiene assistance
- Instruct patients in proper use of sputum cups and personal hygiene for control of tuberculosis or other diseases
- Recognize signs of impending seizures and death and report to proper officials
- Care for the deceased and arrange for prompt delivery to the morgue and maintain necessary records
- Serve food to diet and tray patients and feed weak and helpless patients
- Comb patients' hair, pass mouth washes and basins, provide between-meal nourishment, assist patients in and out of bed, and accompany them to lavatories and clinics
- Keep records and make reports
- Make beds, change linens, and antiseptically clean beds and other personal furniture of patients
- May supervise institution attendants and patient help assigned to assist
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited school of practical nursing or completion of equivalent training in an accredited school of professional nursing
- Active Rhode Island practical nursing license as required by Rhode Island law and regulations
- Must maintain practical nursing registration as a condition of employment
- Working knowledge of approved practical nursing methods, procedures, and techniques used in patient care and treatment
- Ability to learn details of methods, procedures, techniques, and attitudes required in the care and treatment of patients with particular types of illness
- Skill in practical nursing
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
- Ability to maintain records and prepare reports
Pre-Employment Requirements

Schedule
- Second shift: 4:00 PM to 12:00 AM
- Standard 40 hours per week
- Days off to be determined
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary: $62,505.00 to $109,681.00
