Licensed Practical Nurse - Pulmonology

Nebraska Methodist Health System is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) for our Pulmonology clinic at Methodist Physicians Clinic - Westroads Office Park III in Omaha, Nebraska. This full-time position offers flexibility with 32 or 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm.

You will support physicians and patients in a clinic setting by managing patient care coordination, handling telephone triage, preparing patients and exam rooms, and assisting with clinical procedures. This role combines both floor and phone responsibilities, requiring strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with patients, families, and healthcare providers.

Responsibilities

• Document lab results, procedures, and appointments on tracking forms; follow up on missed appointments and procedures
• Assist Health Coaches by managing patient lists and scheduling appointments as directed
• Provide patient and family education according to provider direction
• Perform telephone triage to determine patient needs; receive and return patient calls within 90 minutes based on medical priority
• Accurately record and report patient conditions to providers
• Maintain clean and organized work areas and equipment according to department protocol
• Handle prescription renewals and inquiries; discuss questions with providers and relay information to pharmacies
• Prepare exam rooms and equipment according to provider protocol
• Prepare patients for exams by reviewing medical records, obtaining vital signs, checking weight, performing medication reconciliation, and gathering relevant patient information
• Retrieve tests, medical records, and obtain lab work as directed by providers
• Dispense medications at provider direction and instruct patients and families on proper medication use
• Perform phlebotomy with proper specimen labeling, handling, and documentation
• Answer and return phone calls according to protocol
• Provide test results according to protocol
• Complete pharmacy requests accurately

Required Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
• Current valid Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license, valid compact multistate license, or temporary permit while awaiting licensure
• Phlebotomy experience (floor position only)
• Knowledge of medical terminology and procedures
• Knowledge of medicine including recognition of diseases, deformities, and other illnesses
• Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks
• Proficiency typing information into computer systems
• Ability to provide caring patient care services when interacting with patients and families
• Ability to listen critically to patient questions and provider information to convey information effectively
• Ability to anticipate, recognize, and resolve problems
• Problem-solving skills with flexibility to adapt to daily activities
• Ability to learn and navigate computer programs containing patient information
• Strong verbal communication skills for positive interaction with providers, staff, and patients
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or medical experience
• Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) certification at time of hire

Licenses and Certifications

• Current valid Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license, valid compact multistate license, or temporary permit while awaiting licensure required
• American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at time of hire; required within 3 months of hire

Schedule

• Monday through Friday
• Hours between 8am and 5pm
• Full-time position offering 32 or 40 hours per week

Job Hazards

This position involves frequent exposure to biological agents (airborne and bloodborne viruses), blood or body fluid, chemical agents (toxic, corrosive, flammable, latex), and mechanical moving parts/vibrations. Occasional exposure to equipment/machinery/tools, explosives (pressurized gas), and physical hazards (noise, temperature, lighting, wet floors, sharps) beyond ordinary office environment. Rare exposure to radiation (alpha, beta, gamma particles such as X-ray, CT scan).
