Licensed Practical Nurse-Neurosurgical Orthopedic Medical Surgical Telemetry Department, Full Time Variable

Cape Fear Valley Medical Center is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse for the 2 South Med/Step Down unit, a 25-bed neurosurgical and orthopedic unit serving adult and geriatric patients. In this full-time variable position, you will provide direct nursing care to assigned patients under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, with a typical patient ratio of 1:5.

Clinical Setting

The neurosurgical and orthopedic unit operates on a track schedule and includes a multidisciplinary care team of Registered Nurses, a Clinical Educator, Nursing Assistants, Unit Secretary, Resource Nurses, Case Managers, Physical Therapists, Dieticians, and Occupational and Speech Therapists. New graduate nurses are accepted and welcome.

Responsibilities

• Participate in patient assessment and collaborate with departmental and interdisciplinary groups in developing the patient plan of care
• Follow the patient's plan of care while providing direct nursing care to assigned patients
• Adjust care based on age-specific physiological needs of patients as directed by the Registered Nurse or other authorized personnel
• Maintain accurate and relevant records of patient care
• Administer medications as ordered by the physician
• Facilitate a safe environment and recognize life-threatening situations, responding appropriately
• Maintain required competencies and participate in performance improvement activities
• Monitor the quality of care and establish collaborative interpersonal relationships with other health system staff
• Support patients in the practice of their cultural and spiritual beliefs within the limits of the medical regimen
• Participate in cost containment and complete accurate charging for patient services
• Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse in North Carolina or compact state licensure
• BLS certification from the American Heart Association
• Demonstrated positive interpersonal skills
• Verbal and written communication skills
• Knowledge of age-specific physiological and psychosocial needs of patients
• Speech and auditory acuity for communication of patient needs
• Visual acuity for observation of patients
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift for long periods
• Ability to have skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material

Preferred Qualifications

• 1-2 years of related clinical experience
• Experience in orthopedic or neurosurgical nursing
• Experience with general and podiatry surgery
• Wound care experience
• Experience with surgical drains
• Experience with trauma, vascular, or cardiac monitoring
• Experience with PCA pumps and telemetry

Full-time variable shift on a track schedule.
