Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)-School Health

The University of Miami Department of Pediatrics seeks a full-time Licensed Practical Nurse to provide practical nursing care in school health clinics. In this role, you will deliver first aid, perform health assessments, manage student health records, and coordinate care plans for students with medical conditions. You will work in a school setting, supporting student health and well-being while collaborating with school staff, parents, and the healthcare team.

Clinical Setting

You will work in school health clinics serving students in the Miami, Florida area. The position is part of UHealth-University of Miami Health System, an academic medical center.

Responsibilities

• Collect patient assessment data and notify appropriate nursing staff of actual or potential health problems and needs on an ongoing basis
• Record patient information concisely, accurately, and completely
• Administer medications and perform treatments and procedures as assigned
• Provide first aid and follow-up assessments according to established clinic protocols
• Respond to students' health emergencies and perform care following standing orders within the scope of practice for Florida LPNs
• Manage and update student health records and emergency information, inputting documents into appropriate databases
• Administer medications and treatments, and coordinate care plans for students with medical needs, documenting in clinic databases
• Ensure vaccination compliance and communicate with parents and guardians regarding required health matters
• Maintain clinic inventory, assist with medical supply preparation and orders, discard expired supplies, and adhere to infection control standards
• Coordinate mandated health screenings and inform caregivers of results
• Collaborate with school staff and team leaders to promote health, safety, and effective care delivery
• Ensure a clean and organized clinic environment and report equipment or facility issues to appropriate departments
• Participate in school events and team conferences, some of which may be scheduled outside regular school hours, including evenings and weekends
• Assist with preparation of patient materials and correspondence that RNs, ARNPs, or MDs use to communicate with organizations
• Assist with preoperative and postoperative health teaching for patients and families
• Share responsibility for planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care plans
• Participate in team conferences, sharing knowledge, information, and ideas with team members
• Perform more complex nursing activities as competence increases
• Communicate frequently with team leaders regarding patients' physical and mental conditions
• Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid State of Florida LPN license
• BLS certification from American Heart Association only
• Ability to work during school hours
• Availability to participate in school-related events and team conferences, including those scheduled outside regular school hours such as evenings and weekends

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum one year of nursing experience
• Bilingual English and Spanish
