Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)-School Health

The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Pediatrics seeks a full-time Licensed Practical Nurse to provide practical nursing care in school health clinics in Miami, FL. In this role, you will deliver direct health services to students, manage health emergencies, maintain student health records, and coordinate care for students with medical conditions.

Clinical Setting

You will work in school health clinics serving a student population. The position requires availability during school hours and participation in school-related events and team conferences, some of which may be scheduled outside regular hours, including evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Collect patient assessment data and notify appropriate nursing staff of actual or potential health problems and needs on an ongoing basis
• Record patient information concisely, accurately, and completely
• Administer medications and perform treatments and procedures as assigned
• Provide first aid, follow-up assessments, and direct practical nursing care to students according to established clinic protocols
• Respond to students' health emergencies and perform care following standing orders within the scope of practice for Florida LPNs
• Manage and update student health records and emergency information, inputting necessary documents into appropriate databases
• Administer medications and treatments, and coordinate care plans for students with medical needs, documenting in clinic databases as necessary
• Ensure vaccination compliance and communicate with parents and guardians regarding required health matters
• Maintain clinic inventory, assist with medical supply preparation and orders, discard expired supplies, and adhere to infection control standards
• Coordinate mandated health screenings and inform caregivers of results
• Collaborate with school staff and team leaders to promote health, safety, and effective care delivery
• Ensure a clean and organized clinic environment and report equipment or facility issues to appropriate departments
• Participate in team conferences and share knowledge, information, and ideas with team members
• Assist with preparation of patient materials or correspondence that RNs, ARNPs, or MDs utilize to communicate with organizations within or outside the University
• Assist in preoperative and postoperative health teaching for patients and families
• Share responsibility for planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care plans
• Perform more-complex nursing activities as competence increases
• Communicate frequently with team leaders regarding patients' physical and mental conditions
• Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid State of Florida LPN license
• BLS certification from American Heart Association only
• Ability to work during school hours
• Availability to participate in school-related events and team conferences, including those scheduled outside regular school hours such as evenings and weekends

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum one year of nursing experience
• Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency
• Learning agility and ability to learn new procedures, technologies, and protocols, and adapt to changing priorities and work demands
• Ability to work collaboratively with others and contribute to a team environment
• Skilled in using office software, technology, and relevant computer applications
• Strong and clear written and verbal communication skills for interacting with colleagues and stakeholders
