The Huntsville City School System is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to provide health services to students across the school district. Working under the guidance of a supervising RN, you will deliver mandated student health services, reduce absenteeism due to illness and injury, and serve as a health resource to students, families, teachers, and community partners.
Clinical Setting
You will work in a school-based health setting serving the Huntsville City School System student population. This is an itinerant position, meaning you will travel between multiple school locations as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Provide health services to students according to medical needs and school system assignments, following Standards of School Nursing Practice and applicable federal, state, and local regulations
- Serve as a medical resource to teachers, principals, students, parents, and community agencies by providing relevant health information and education
- Act as a liaison between the school district, student families, medical professionals, and various agencies to promote effective patient case management
- Perform student health screenings including scoliosis, vision, and head lice checks
- Provide early detection of communicable diseases and appropriate notification as required by law
- Communicate medical referral needs to parents and guardians, document information for referred medical professionals, and follow up as needed
- Document and report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect to your supervisor as required by law
- Triage sick and injured students and provide emergency and non-emergency medical care and procedures
- Follow infection control policies for exclusion and readmission of students with communicable diseases and report to the Alabama Department of Public Health as required
- Implement health care management plans (IHP, EAP, CAP) for chronically and acutely ill students as developed by physicians or parents and guardians
- Instruct and educate staff and school representatives on health care management plans and document education provided
- Provide annual refresher training and monitoring of Medication Assistants using standardized checklists
- Review and complete state-required immunization surveys for student records and communicate deficiencies to administrators and parents and guardians
- Participate in school-based committees and meetings regarding student health and wellness, including IEP/504 meetings and Crisis Action Team meetings
- Collect and enter data into the computerized student database for nursing interventions, clinic visits, immunization records, chronic illnesses, medications, and other health information
- Attend in-service training events and professional development activities regarding school nursing procedures, processes, practices, and computer skills
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) degree or certification from an accredited school of nursing
- Minimum three years of experience working in a school or medical setting
- Valid nursing license to practice in Alabama
- Valid Alabama driver's license
- Current CPR/AED certification
- Proficiency in computer and typing skills

- Additional two years of college in a related field
Schedule and Employment Terms
- 187-day work year
- Salary as recommended by the Superintendent and approved by the Board
Physical Requirements
- Ability to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly
