The opportunity

Job Description

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs is hiring a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) for full-time evening shift work at the Minneapolis Veterans Home, a skilled nursing facility providing long-term care to veterans. In this role, you will deliver compassionate, person-centered care to residents, assist with activities of daily living, ensure safety and quality of care, and help residents achieve their highest functional capabilities.

Clinical Setting

The Minneapolis Veterans Home is a skilled nursing facility located on a 53-acre wooded campus with nature trails and biking paths overlooking the Mississippi River. The facility provides a supportive environment that fosters a stable, healthy, and meaningful life for veterans.

Responsibilities

  • Provide compassionate, person-centered care for residents in a long-term nursing facility
  • Assist residents with activities of daily living
  • Ensure safety and quality of care is provided
  • Help residents attain their highest functional capabilities
  • Complete electronic charting in PointClickCare
  • Maintain clear and accurate documentation
  • Communicate effectively with residents, families, and the interdisciplinary team

Schedule

This is a full-time position working evening shift from 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM. The work schedule includes at least 80 hours per 2-week pay period and may include additional hours based on business needs. Days off rotate: Week 1 includes Saturday and Sunday off; Week 2 includes Friday and Tuesday off.

Compensation and Bonuses

Salary ranges from $28.01 to $35.83 per hour ($58,485 to $74,813 annually), plus a $2.25 per hour shift differential for all hours worked after 6:00 PM and before 6:00 AM. New hires in full-time AFSCME positions may be eligible for a $2,500 new hire bonus.

Required Qualifications

  • Active Minnesota license as a Practical Nurse with no restrictions and in good standing
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross, or ability to be certified by date of hire
  • Computer skills sufficient to complete electronic charting, specifically in PointClickCare
  • Ability to communicate effectively, follow instructions, and keep clear and accurate notes and documentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a skilled nursing facility, long-term care, or other senior healthcare environment
  • Experience working with veterans
  • Effective interpersonal skills in establishing and maintaining positive working relationships

Additional Requirements

  • Employment reference checks will be conducted on finalists, which may include a review of documentation related to job performance and contact with former employers
  • Tuberculosis (Mantoux) screening or chest X-ray required prior to employment
  • Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) background check may be conducted on top finalists; a finalist must pass the DHS background check
