This full-time Licensed Practical Nurse position is based in a correctional facility, providing nursing care to an incarcerated patient population during evening and night shifts (7pm-7:30am). You will work within the LPN scope of practice to deliver timely and accurate nursing care, manage sick call screenings, administer medications, and coordinate medical services under the direction of a practitioner.

Clinical Setting

You will work in a correctional healthcare environment, collaborating with medical and security staff to provide on-site and coordinate off-site medical services. The role may require coverage at other correctional facilities operated by ACH clients.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and perform work within the LPN's scope of practice
  • Plan and deliver nursing care to patients in a timely and accurate manner
  • Check and record vital signs, peak flows, blood glucose checks, weight, and other diagnostic tests as appropriate
  • Prioritize intake screenings completed by correctional officers for necessity and priority at sick call
  • Provide patient education on correctional facility policies and discharge planning
  • Administer prescribed medications, treatments, and other tasks as ordered by the practitioner
  • Record information in chronic clinic and outcome study documents as indicated
  • Provide emergency first aid care as appropriate
  • Report reactions to treatments and medications, as well as changes in patients' emotional or physical condition
  • Collect and record data for continuous quality improvement (CQI) reporting
  • Record care information concisely, accurately, and completely in a timely manner using appropriate formats and forms
  • Collaborate and coordinate multiple medical services for diagnosis and treatment as directed by the practitioner
  • Maintain working knowledge of pharmacology, including drug reactions and overdose management
  • Maintain working knowledge of therapeutic diets and nutrition
  • Utilize Universal Precautions for infection prevention and control
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA practices as required by government agencies
  • Notify supervisor of medical and security incidents
  • Participate in in-service education sessions
  • Train new hires and coworkers as requested
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Schedule

  • Full-time position
  • 7pm-7:30am shift
  • May be asked to cover shifts at other correctional facilities

Required Qualifications

  • Active nursing license in the state where services are provided, in good standing
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification with hands-on training
  • Excellent documentation skills
  • Knowledge of the LPN scope of practice
