The State of Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities is hiring a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) on a full-time or part-time basis. In this role, you will provide direct nursing care to patients under the direction of a registered nurse, physician, dentist, podiatrist, optometrist, or chiropractor. You will work within the scope of practice defined by Ohio Revised Code Section 4723.01.

Responsibilities

  • Administer nursing care including oxygen therapy, sterile dressings, catheter insertion, gastrostomy tube reinsertion, wound irrigation, enemas, specimen collection, dialysis treatments, and hemodialysis equipment operation and monitoring
  • Assist physicians with physical exams, treatments, and laboratory tests
  • Respond to emergencies by administering first aid, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and restraining patients as needed
  • Administer controlled drugs such as narcotics and minor tranquilizers, as well as non-controlled medications in oral, rectal, topical, or injectable form (intramuscular and subcutaneous injections only)
  • Provide medication instructions to patients
  • Maintain medication accountability records, including charting patient records, preparing and counting medications, and maintaining medication stock and medical equipment and supplies
  • Observe, document, and report patient conditions including medication reactions, treatment responses, patient behavior, and progress
  • Prepare and maintain related reports and records such as unusual incident reports, patient records, medication reports, seclusion and restraint logs, patient kardex, and team plans
  • Provide general nursing and direct care including taking vital signs, assisting with personal grooming and hygiene, bathing, daily living activities, administering topical ointments and solutions, eye and ear drops, repositioning patients, and responding to patient alarms
  • Make medical appointments for patients and escort patients to activities
  • Provide one-to-one and group activities according to intervention stated on treatment plan
  • Provide work direction, orientation, and training to lower-level direct care staff such as hospital aides, orderlies, and psychiatric attendants
  • Attend and participate in staff conferences, committees, interdisciplinary team meetings, in-service training programs, and nursing meetings as assigned
  • Order medication and medical supplies
  • Clean the nurses station, medication room, and medication cart including cleaning, sterilizing, and restocking the cart, and defrosting and cleaning the medication refrigerator
  • Perform clerical tasks such as answering phones and filing

Required Qualifications

  • Active license to practice nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse issued by the Ohio Board of Nursing pursuant to Section 4723 of the Ohio Revised Code
  • MDS certification issued by ANNAC (American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordination)

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of skilled licensed practical nursing procedures, pharmacology, client and patient care, first aid, CPR, general hospital practices and procedures, agency and institutional practices and procedures, HIPAA regulations and standards, human relations, inventory control, and employee training and development
  • Skill in use of medical equipment including respirators, dialysis machines, sterilizers, oxygen equipment, and blood pressure cuffs
  • Skill with hypodermics and operation of personal computers
  • Ability to understand the practical field of study and deal with concrete variables
  • Ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate emergency action
  • Ability to develop good rapport with patients and residents
  • Ability to understand manuals and verbal instructions associated with practical nursing
  • Dexterity to administer injections and perform medical treatments
  • Strength to move, reposition, and restrain patients

Additional Requirements

  • The final applicant selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis prior to appointment to test for illegal drug use. An applicant with a positive test result will not be offered employment.
  • The final candidate selected will be required to undergo a criminal background check. Rule 5123-2-02, "Background Investigations for Employment," outlines disqualifying offenses that will preclude employment by the Department of Developmental Disabilities.
