Job Description

Duke Primary Care in Durham is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse for a float pool position supporting comprehensive primary care services. This role provides direct patient care in a clinic setting that serves both adult and pediatric populations, offering family medicine, preventive care, chronic illness management, diagnostic services, and specialized care for conditions such as asthma, allergies, and diabetes.

The clinic operates Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm. As a float pool position, you will be assigned to various Duke Primary Care locations as needed.

Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Administer medications and IV fluids as prescribed by physicians and maintain accurate records
  • Provide direct patient care under the supervision of a nurse or physician
  • Follow physician orders and nursing care plans for patient care
  • Report patient responses to care to a nurse for evaluation and adjustments to the care plan
  • Assist other healthcare staff in delivering patient care
  • Help physicians and nurses with diagnostic procedures
  • Assess nursing care needs, patient responses, and prioritize nursing tasks

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Help develop and implement policies to ensure patient comfort and safety
  • Contribute to maintaining the care environment, including equipment and supplies
  • Identify and assist in improving clinical and operational performance
  • Assist in managing supplies and equipment, reporting any malfunctions to the charge nurse
  • Participate in training programs and help train new staff
  • Perform other related duties as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from an approved or accredited Practical Nurse program
  • Current North Carolina LPN license or compact LPN license (required to begin work while pursuing permanent NC licensure)
  • BLS certification and other required life support certifications
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods
  • Proficiency in fine motor skills
  • Ability to use computers and learn new software
  • Knowledge of sterile techniques and special procedures relevant to the role
  • Knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions
  • Understanding of sanitation, hygiene, and health safety in a healthcare setting
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Knowledge of and compliance with JCAHO and other regulatory requirements

  • Clear communication with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, and leadership; ability to teach patients and families based on the care plan
  • Ability to process and prioritize information, treatment, and follow-up using sensory and cognitive functions
  • Ability to find resources independently and work well with others
  • Accurate recording of activities and documentation of interventions
  • Ability to navigate the healthcare system to provide patient care
  • Ability to stay focused and organized
  • Familiarity with administering routine and special treatments to patients
