The Department of Human Services, Division of Healthcare Licensed Nurses, is hiring a Licensed Practical Nurse for the 2nd shift within the Division of Veteran's Affairs. This position involves providing practical nursing care and treatment to patients in a veteran's healthcare setting under the direction of physicians and registered professional nurses.
Responsibilities
- Perform practical nursing duties involving the care and treatment of patients
- Make regular rounds of wards individually or with staff physicians or registered professional nurses
- Administer intramuscular and subcutaneous injections and other medications and treatments as directed by a physician or registered nurse
- Make and apply surgical dressings
- Administer narcotics and maintain records under close supervision of a physician or registered professional nurse
- Set up and assist in operating special apparatus and equipment
- Take and record temperature, pulse, and respiration
- Maintain bedside charts
- Assist at physical examinations and prepare patients for special examinations and tests
- Assist in medical or rehabilitation treatment provided by physical therapy programs
- Provide personal hygiene care including tub and bed baths, morning and evening care
- Instruct patients in proper use of sputum cups and personal hygiene for disease control
- Recognize signs of impending seizures and death and report to proper officials
- Care for the deceased and arrange delivery to the morgue with necessary record-keeping
- Serve food to patients and feed weak and helpless patients
- Assist patients with grooming, provide between-meal nourishment, and assist with mobility and lavatory access
- Make beds, change linens, and maintain antiseptic conditions of patient areas
- Keep records and prepare reports
- Perform related work as required
Supervision
- Works under close technical direction of a physician or close supervision of a registered professional nurse
- May supervise institution attendants and patient help assigned to assist
- Receives detailed assignments and precise instructions for routine and new activities
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited school of practical nursing or completion of equivalent training in an accredited school of professional nursing
- Active Rhode Island practical nursing license as required by Rhode Island law and regulations
- Must maintain practical nursing registration as a condition of employment
- Working knowledge of approved practical nursing methods, procedures, and techniques
- Ability to learn details of methods, procedures, and techniques for care of patients with specific illnesses
- Skill in practical nursing
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
- Ability to maintain records and prepare reports

- Proof of immunity against Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis (Tdap)
- Hepatitis B titers

Compensation
- Salary: $62,505 - $109,681
