The Birmingham Board of Education seeks an Itinerant Registered Nurse to provide comprehensive health services to students across various schools in the district. In this role, you will deliver direct patient care, manage student health needs, and support the overall health and safety of the school community according to the Standards of School Nursing Practice published by the American Nurses Association and the National Association of School Nurses.
Clinical Setting
You will work across multiple school locations within the Birmingham school system, serving students in a school-based health clinic environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct student care including first aid, medication administration, and invasive procedures requiring independent nursing judgment
- Conduct health appraisals and make referrals for vision, hearing, dental, physical disability, and scoliosis screening according to district policies
- Administer medications using aseptic techniques and in compliance with all policies, procedures, and guidelines
- Screen students for head lice and provide parent instruction on treatment
- Obtain and maintain comprehensive student health histories using available sources and electronic patient records
- Develop and review health care plans and emergency care plans for students annually
- Monitor health clinic equipment, supplies, and medications for expiration and proper storage
- Maintain security and confidentiality of all student health information and records
- Prepare health reports for supervisors, the Board of Education, health department, and State Department of Education as required
- Provide resources and professional learning to school personnel on health and safety topics
- Train and evaluate medication assistants on proper medication administration procedures
- Perform other reasonable and equitable job-related duties as assigned
Schedule
- Nine-month position (184 work days)
- Non-exempt status
Compensation
- Classified Schedule 47-4; 48-1-3
- Salary range: $45,903 – $88,562 depending on degree level
Required Qualifications
- Valid current license to practice nursing in the State of Alabama
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing approved by the Alabama Board of Nursing
- Associate degree or higher in nursing
- Current CPR certification
- Employment experience gained in the private employment sector may be considered
Additional Requirements
- Background check required (employment contingent upon meeting suitability criteria established by the Alabama State Department of Education)
- Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity required to perform job responsibilities
