Job Description

Mount Sinai Medical Center is seeking a Housekeeping Operating Room professional for a full-time mid-shift position. You will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and readiness of surgical areas, ensuring a safe and sterile environment for patients and surgical teams.

Clinical Setting

You will work in a busy operating room environment at Mount Sinai Medical Center, a 674-bed main campus facility and South Florida's largest private independent not-for-profit hospital. The medical center operates 12 facilities across Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties with 38 medical services.

Responsibilities

  • Clean surgical areas by removing waste and linen, washing down furniture, surgical lights, beds, stretchers, mattresses, walls, bar huggers, SCD machines, wiping down electrical cords, and mopping floors
  • Replace furniture and equipment in designated locations in preparation for the next case, including stretchers, OR beds, IV poles, and monitors
  • Keep stretchers, IV poles, OR beds, tables, equipment, specialty carts, mayo stands, and kick buckets clean and free of tape and suture
  • Remove and replace sharp containers when 3/4 full
  • Maintain inventory of full oxygen tanks with carriers, blankets, cleaning supplies, IV pumps, and other supplies needed
  • Stock scrub brushes, masks, face shields, cleaning solutions, and paper towels in sub sterile areas
  • Adhere to standard precautions at all times, including wearing gloves, face shields, and goggles when cleaning rooms
  • Prepare germicidal solutions according to manufacturer recommendations and MSDS protocol
  • Use proper body mechanics and safety protocols when moving patients to and from OR beds and when holding for sterile preps
  • Transport patients with care to prevent skin breakdown, particularly elderly patients
  • Transport infants and toddlers in secured beds or cribs, allowing parents to accompany children to the holding area
  • Transport specimens, blood and blood products, amputated limbs, and the deceased to and from lab or morgue, maintaining custody until delivery to the appropriate person
  • Transport lasers, GI carts, equipment, and supplies to and from other units with extreme care to prevent damage
  • Check patient ID bands and verbally confirm patient name and date of birth against pick-up slips prior to transport in an efficient and courteous manner
  • Verify patient name bands, date of birth, and surgical side or site with unit RN before performing surgical shaves according to policy, ensuring patient privacy and comfort
  • Use sterile gloves to hold extremities for skin prep using sterile technique when necessary
  • Report to supervisor or core desk when leaving the department and sign out
  • Maintain terminal cleaning logs in a legible manner
  • Arrive promptly to in-service and staff meetings and complete necessary documentation in a timely manner
  • Maintain current CPR status
  • Observe and monitor patient safety by providing a safe environment, maintaining eye contact, and never leaving patients unattended
  • Respect sterile fields by maintaining proper distance from open sterile items
  • Perform weekly autoclave and sterilizer cleaning as per departmental policy

Required Qualifications

  • CPR certification
  • Current CPR status must be maintained

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year of experience within a healthcare environment
