Henry Ford Jackson Nurse Extern Program

As a Nurse Extern at Henry Ford Health Jackson, you will perform specific patient care duties under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. Working in our mid-Michigan acute care setting, you will assist in planning and implementing patient care using the nursing process, respond to emergent situations according to established procedures, and participate in continuing education to support your nursing studies.

Clinical Setting

Henry Ford Health Jackson is located 40 minutes west of Ann Arbor, 40 minutes south of Lansing, and 40 minutes east of Battle Creek. The hospital is situated in a community-focused environment surrounded by natural beauty.

Responsibilities

• Perform specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs of patients
• Provide input to assist the RN in planning and implementing patient care
• Respond to emergent situations according to established procedures
• Participate in continuing education

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
• Currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing
• Completion of two clinical rotations, one of which must be Med/Surg in an acute care setting
• Current Health Care Provider Certification

Education and Enrollment Requirements

You must actively remain enrolled in a nursing program and successfully complete each course. You are required to provide transcripts to your Nurse Manager after each semester or term and provide a copy of your plan of work to your Nurse Manager. If at any point you do not meet your academic institution's standard for continued enrollment in nursing classes, your employment as an extern will be rescinded.

Position Duration

This is a time-limited position with a maximum duration of 12 months for ADN programs or 24 months for BSN programs (adjusted for part-time BSN programs). You must successfully complete a 180-day introductory period to achieve knowledge of policies relative to job duties and patient care unit operations. Certification may be completed during orientation.
