UMass Memorial Health is seeking new graduate registered nurses for the Harrington New Graduate Registered Nurse Residency Program. This 13-week structured orientation program is designed to support the transition from nursing student to newly licensed professional nurse. You will work on the 2N IP Adult Acute Care unit, providing direct patient care to adult patients in an inpatient acute care setting.
This is a non-exempt position offering a robust orientation with 1:1 preceptorship support. The program incorporates evidence-based educational strategies to prepare you for successful professional practice, with a combination of clinical hours on the unit and classroom education.
Clinical Setting
You will work on an inpatient adult acute care unit at UMass Memorial Health, a premier health system in Central Massachusetts.
Responsibilities
- Utilize the nursing process for delivery and management of patient care from admission to discharge
- Perform patient assessments and reassessments according to standard procedures
- Develop and coordinate individual plans of care including discharge planning
- Direct, supervise, coordinate, and evaluate nursing care within the assigned clinical setting
- Delegate appropriately to others in accordance with job description and competency level
- Document patient care according to standard procedures
- Develop, implement, and coordinate education plans for patients, families, and significant others
- Ensure quality and continuity of care through collaboration with other healthcare providers
- Administer medications, perform treatments and therapies, and operate equipment according to policy and procedure
- Assist physicians with treatments, procedures, and special tests as required
- Participate in nursing governance activities
- Assume responsibility for professional growth and assist in education and development of staff
- Participate in performance improvement initiatives and demonstrate quality improvement in daily operations
- Comply with departmental policies, procedures, and objectives
- Attend meetings, conferences, and seminars as required
- Comply with all health and safety regulations and requirements
- Maintain regular, reliable, and predictable attendance
Schedule and Shifts
- Hours: Minimum 24 hours, typically 36 hours per week on the unit with additional hours in the classroom
- Shift: 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm or 7pm-7am)
- Flexibility for day, evening, and night shifts during the 13-week orientation; minimum 8-hour shifts with flexibility up to 12-hour shifts
- Holiday schedule: Every third holiday
- Weekend schedule: Every third weekend
- Monday through Friday availability required
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing within Massachusetts within the last 12 months, or RN work experience within the last 12 months of program start
- Current Massachusetts RN licensure and registration (may apply prior to completing license requirements but must have graduated from an accredited Massachusetts nursing program)
- Completion of an accredited nursing program (BSN or ADN)
- BLS certification required for every RN, unless ACLS certification is current; ACLS may be substituted for BLS
- Thorough knowledge of the discipline of nursing
- Any unit-specific certifications and competencies as required

- Completion of an accredited BSN or ADN program
