Job Description

Join Phoenix Children's as a Graduate Nurse Extern and launch your nursing career in a pediatric healthcare setting. This supervised position works in collaboration with the healthcare team, patient, and family to promote patient health through delivery of professional nursing care appropriate to each patient's age and condition. You will work closely with a clinical nurse mentor who will guide you through evidence-based nursing practice and hospital standards.

Responsibilities

  • Complete supervised nursing assessments of patient conditions, including physical, psychological, social, developmental, and educational factors, to determine initial compliance with treatment plans per policy and unit guidelines
  • Perform supervised ongoing patient and family assessments and identify variations from diagnoses
  • Continually evaluate patient responses to care, teaching, and discharge plans
  • Document patient progress in appropriate charts and share observations and assessment outcomes with the healthcare team and families to ensure timely communication and understanding of patient health status, progress, and ongoing needs
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing required activities within established parameters to ensure compliance with all applicable medication, storage, and documentation standards, regulations, and requirements
  • Provide orientation to the unit, hospital systems, and processes to patients and family members to ensure familiarity with unit policies and requirements
  • Collaborate with the clinical nurse in supervising patient care activities of assigned team members and delegate activities appropriate to knowledge, skill, and competency
  • Participate in providing timely feedback and review of care delivery to ensure maintenance of patient safety, infection control procedures, therapeutic environment, and team members' performance level, maintaining confidentiality as appropriate
  • Work collaboratively with the supervising clinical nurse, patient care team, and family members to establish and implement plans of care to ensure coordination of activities and ongoing communication of patient health status
  • Participate in patient care rounds and patient care conferences as appropriate
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as requested
