Full-Time Psychiatric & Family Nurse Practitioner

The IAFF Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Treatment and Recovery seeks a dual-boarded Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to provide comprehensive medical and psychiatric care for professional fire service members facing PTSD, trauma, substance use disorders, addiction, and co-occurring mental health challenges.

This full-time position offers the opportunity to treat both the medical and psychiatric needs of patients throughout the addiction treatment continuum in a specialized, supportive clinical environment.

Clinical Setting

The IAFF Center of Excellence is a facility devoted exclusively to the well-being of fire service members. You will work alongside experienced addiction medicine and psychiatric professionals in a collaborative, physician-led environment with a multidisciplinary treatment team including physicians, nurses, therapists, and case managers.

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive medical and psychiatric assessment and treatment for patients throughout the addiction treatment continuum
• Evaluate patients for substance use disorders, intoxication, withdrawal, and other medical or psychiatric conditions
• Assess and manage withdrawal symptoms and prescribe medications in accordance with established protocols and clinical judgment
• Evaluate medication effectiveness, adverse effects, complications, and potential drug interactions
• Assess patients for risk of suicide or harm to others using evidence-based tools, including the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) and PHQ-9
• Develop individualized treatment recommendations based on clinical findings and patient needs
• Assess nutritional concerns and deficiencies and provide appropriate interventions or referrals
• Evaluate and manage acute and chronic pain using appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches
• Perform physical examinations and complete medical progress notes and discharge summaries
• Review and document laboratory data, HIV results, and STD results; communicate positive STD results to nursing for state health department reporting as applicable
• Screen for co-occurring primary diagnoses and understand ASAM criteria and Medical Needs Criteria for documentation and treatment planning
• Collaborate closely with the multidisciplinary treatment team
• Complete timely, accurate, and compliant documentation in the electronic health record
• Maintain compliance with company policies, state regulations, and Joint Commission standards
• Develop cost-effective methods to provide medically necessary therapeutic services
• Review all level of care changes and provide peer reviews when required
• Provide support to Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and students as required
• Participate in weekend coverage and telephonic on-call responsibilities as needed; must be within one hour of facility when on-call

Required Qualifications

• Master's degree or higher from an accredited nursing program with dual credentials as a Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
• Active state licensure as a Nurse Practitioner (FNP and PMHNP) in the state of practice
• DEA registration to prescribe controlled medications
• Completion of at least eight (8) hours of educational training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders as outlined by the DEA
• Training on Buprenorphine prescribing as outlined by the DEA in the state(s) of practice
• Depending on the state of practice, may need a protocol agreement completed by the NP and Medical Director; in some states, DEA may not be obtainable until protocol approval by the local nursing board

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in Addiction Medicine or Primary Behavioral Health
• Familiarity with JCAHO and other indicated healthcare standards
• Familiarity with ASAM criteria and other indicated healthcare standards
• Knowledge of Continuous Quality Improvement and Performance Improvement Team philosophy

Schedule

• Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM EST
• Occasional weekend coverage required
• Telephonic on-call rotation participation required
