Full-Time Psychiatric & Family Nurse Practitioner

Advanced Recovery Systems seeks a dual-boarded Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) for the IAFF Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Treatment and Recovery in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. This role provides comprehensive medical and psychiatric care to professional fire service members facing PTSD, trauma, substance use disorders, addiction, and co-occurring mental health conditions within a specialized, supportive treatment environment.

Clinical Setting

The IAFF Center of Excellence is a facility devoted exclusively to the behavioral health treatment and recovery needs of fire service members. You will work within a collaborative, physician-led multidisciplinary team including physicians, nurses, therapists, case managers, and other treatment professionals.

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive medical and psychiatric assessment and treatment for patients throughout the addiction treatment continuum
• Evaluate patients for substance use disorders, intoxication, withdrawal, and other medical or psychiatric conditions
• Assess and manage withdrawal symptoms and prescribe medications according to established protocols and clinical judgment
• Evaluate medication effectiveness, adverse effects, complications, and potential drug interactions
• Assess patients for risk of suicide or harm to others using evidence-based tools including the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) and PHQ-9
• Develop individualized treatment recommendations based on clinical findings and patient needs
• Assess nutritional concerns and deficiencies and provide appropriate interventions or referrals
• Evaluate and manage acute and chronic pain using pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches
• Screen for co-occurring primary psychiatric conditions
• Perform physical examinations and document medical progress notes and discharge summaries
• Order medications and ancillary services
• Interpret and document laboratory data
• Review and document HIV and STD results; communicate positive STD results to nursing for state health department reporting as applicable
• Understand and apply ASAM criteria and Medical Needs Criteria in documentation and treatment planning
• Collaborate closely with the multidisciplinary treatment team
• Complete timely, accurate, and compliant documentation in the electronic health record
• Maintain compliance with company policies, state regulations, and Joint Commission standards
• Develop cost-effective methods to provide medically necessary therapeutic services
• Assist in formulating and supporting the highest standards of patient care
• Review all level of care changes and provide peer reviews when required
• Provide support to Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and students as required
• Understand and abide by all safety, risk management, infection control, and other guidelines
• Participate in weekend coverage and telephonic on-call responsibilities as needed
• Perform other tasks and duties as assigned

Schedule

• Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM EST
• Occasional weekend coverage required
• Telephonic on-call rotation participation required
• Must be within one hour of the facility when assigned on-call duties

Required Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited Nursing Master's Program with a Family Nurse Practitioner degree or higher and a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner degree
• Active state licensure as a Nurse Practitioner with both Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner credentials in the appropriate state
• DEA registration to prescribe controlled medications
• Completion of at least eight (8) hours of educational training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders as outlined by the DEA
• Buprenorphine prescribing training as required by the DEA in the state(s) where working
• Depending on the state, may need a protocol agreement completed by the NP and Medical Director prior to hire (in some states, DEA may not be obtainable until protocol approval by the local nursing board)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in Addiction Medicine or Primary Behavioral Health
• Familiarity with JCAHO and other indicated healthcare standards
• Familiarity with ASAM criteria and other indicated healthcare standards
• Knowledge of Continuous Quality Improvement and Performance Improvement Team philosophy
• Ability to develop and apply organizational strategies
