Family Nurse Practitioner for Acute Pain Service, Medical Pain Service and Pain Management Center Clinic

Cincinnati Children's is seeking a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) to join the Surgical Pain Services and Medical Pain Services teams. In this role, you will conduct evening rounds on post-operative surgical and medical pain service patients, assessing pain levels and clinical status to ensure effective pain management and continuity of care overnight.

Clinical Setting

This position is based at the Burnet Campus in the Department of Surgical Pain Services at Cincinnati Children's, a nationally recognized top 10 pediatric academic medical center.

Responsibilities

• Conduct evening rounds on post-operative surgical and medical pain service patients, assessing pain levels and overall clinical status
• Develop, implement, and adjust individualized pain management plans in collaboration with surgical, primary, and pain management teams
• Monitor patient response to pain interventions, ensuring comfort, safety, and effectiveness
• Respond to acute pain issues arising during evening hours and modify plans as needed
• Provide patient, family, and nursing education regarding pain management strategies and recovery expectations
• Collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary care team, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other healthcare providers
• Maintain accurate, timely, and thorough documentation of assessments, care plans, and interventions
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing pain management protocols and patient outcomes
• Perform history and physical exams on patients presenting for care
• Assess and diagnose illnesses, including chronic and acute conditions
• Formulate, document, and monitor treatment plans
• Order and monitor therapeutic interventions including diets, laboratory, radiological, and diagnostic tests as deemed necessary
• Provide clinical consultation and order interdisciplinary consults
• Prescribe medications in accordance with Federal and State Law, Rules, and CCHMC policy
• Develop outcomes as measurable goals that provide direction for continuity of care and consistency among providers
• Develop, prioritize, evaluate, and modify individualized comprehensive plans of care
• Involve the patient, family, and caregiver in outcomes and plans of care when possible
• Consider risks, benefits, costs, clinical effectiveness, current scientific evidence, clinical guidelines, and clinical expertise when formulating interventions and treatments
• Maintain professional behaviors aligned with core values and care standards
• Participate in quality improvement activities or research to improve care delivery and patient outcomes
• Participate in lifelong learning and professional development activities
• Serve as preceptor, role model, or mentor to colleagues
• Integrate ethical considerations and research findings into practice
• Advocate for the pediatric patient, family, and caregiver

• Communicate with healthcare team members to achieve integrated delivery of pediatric care services
• Delegate appropriate monitoring, assessment, and interventions according to patient needs and scope of practice
• Make appropriate referrals and discuss recommendations with patient, family, and caregiver
• Provide patients and families with diagnostic and laboratory results as well as benefits, limitations, and adverse effects of proposed therapies
• Use systematic, ongoing evaluation of assessment data and outcomes to revise diagnoses, outcomes, plans of care, and implementation as needed
• Evaluate the accuracy of diagnoses, effectiveness of interventions, and plan of care strategies in relation to expected outcomes
• Base evaluation on advanced knowledge, practice, and research

Required Qualifications

• Master's degree in a related field or Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree
• Licensed Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) with active or eligible Ohio licensure
• Licensure and certification in accordance with CCHMC Delineation of Privileges
• Strong clinical assessment and critical-thinking skills
• Excellent communication and collaboration abilities
• Commitment to patient- and family-centered care

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in pain management, surgical services, acute care, or inpatient settings

Schedule

• Full-time position, 0.9 FTE (36 hours per week)
• Day shift
• 7 ten-hour shifts per pay period
• Every other pay period includes a 4-hour shift assigned as non-clinical shift

Compensation

• Expected starting pay range: $104,000.00 - $130,686.40
• Starting pay is based on experience, skills, and equity; exceptions may apply for highly qualified candidates
• Additional pay (shift, on-call, or weekend differentials) and benefits may apply
• Annual pay may vary based on FTE status
• Benefits are prorated by FTE

Additional Requirements

• Multi-state licensure in addition to Ohio licensure may be required based on subspecialty
• Scope for subspecialty role will not exceed the scope of the collaborating or supervising MD
