ED Patient Care Technician

Rhode Island Hospital is seeking an ED Patient Care Technician to provide direct patient care and support in the Emergency Department. In this role, you will work under the supervision of registered nurses and clinical managers to assist patients and their families from arrival through discharge. You will perform a variety of clinical and clerical duties as part of the healthcare team, including patient care assistance, vital signs collection, EKG administration, phlebotomy, specimen handling, and procedural support.

Clinical Setting

You will be assigned to work in the Emergency Department at Rhode Island Hospital, a Brown University Health facility. The role involves exposure to a patient care environment with frequent standing, walking, and sitting.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct physical care and assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) under the direction of registered nurses
• Collaborate with registered nurses to set priorities and organize work
• Communicate all pertinent observations to the responsible registered nurse
• Perform selected procedures and treatments according to standards and protocols
• Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges
• Collect, label, and document patient specimens and belongings
• Set up and assist with cardiac monitoring devices and run 12-lead electrocardiograms (EKGs)
• Report findings to the registered nurse
• Perform vital signs collection per hospital policy or physician/RN request
• Document patient-reported pain using appropriate pain scales
• Perform technical skills including pulse oximetry, phlebotomy, minor non-sterile dressings, and finger sticks
• Assist physicians and nurses with procedures such as suture placement/removal, dressing changes, line placement, endoscopic procedures, bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures, and NG tube insertions
• Assist in positioning and holding patients for invasive procedures
• Maintain patient and family confidentiality according to hospital standards
• Serve as an active patient and family advocate
• Support and reinforce teaching provided by registered nurses
• Identify cardiopulmonary arrest and initiate CPR
• Adhere to universal precautions, safety programs, and infection control measures
• Maintain an environment conducive to patient comfort and safety
• Adhere to fall precaution and constant observation protocols as assigned
• Organize and prioritize workload based on patient and unit needs
• File reports in charts accurately and maintain medical records
• Answer phones and intercoms using proper etiquette
• Utilize hospital computer systems to execute orders, retrieve data, and generate reports
• Manage multiple tasks and rapidly transition between priorities
• Page physicians and others via hospital page systems and emergency operator
• Perform secretarial duties including patient type codes, discharge disposition codes, observation and inpatient status, patient service charges, and consult calls
• Prepare rooms and patients for physicians and nurses
• Collect, label, and secure patient belongings appropriately
• Utilize sound judgment to recognize urgency levels and respond appropriately
• Handle potentially critical situations with speed and sensitivity
• Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent
• Current Rhode Island registration as a Certified Nursing Assistant or completion of a Medical Assistant training program (9 months or longer with curriculum including sterile technique and sepsis)
• Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS)
• Effective interpersonal communication skills
• Ability to multi-task and perform a variety of complex duties
• Basic computer skills
• Ability to read, write legibly, and speak English
• Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns

Preferred Qualifications

• Basic knowledge of medical terminology
• Basic knowledge of the hospital's patient care delivery orientation program

Education and Certifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Current Rhode Island Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) registration or completion of an accredited Medical Assistant training program (minimum 9 months; curriculum must include sterile technique and sepsis)
• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification

Schedule

• Day shift: 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM
• Every other weekend and holiday
• No driving required

Compensation

• Pay range: $23.20 - $23.66 per hour
