CSP Operating Room

DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital is seeking a Central Sterile Processing (CSP) Operating Room Coordinator for the evening shift. This role coordinates the oversight of surgical instruments and supplies between the OR and Central Sterile Processing to ensure that requested items are available and to facilitate efficient case flow. You will work in Michigan's first Level I Trauma Center, which includes the state's first and largest verified burn center and a 24/7 hyperbaric oxygen program.

Responsibilities

• Assist operating room staff in preparing OR suites for surgery by verifying instrument trays are available prior to case start times
• Transport sterile instruments and supplies to the operating room using appropriate standards and techniques, performing package integrity checks on all items
• Monitor case flow throughout the day, track instrument needs, and notify CSP personnel in advance of any additional or emergent instrument needs
• Assist in removing soiled case carts and non-sterile instrumentation from the operating room for return to CSP for processing
• Plan and coordinate instrument turnarounds with CSP staff and communicate essential instrumentation information to the surgical team that may affect surgery start times
• Verify that instrument needs for the next day have been cleaned, wrapped, sterilized, and are available for use
• Demonstrate working knowledge of surgical instruments and identify when instruments are broken, damaged, or not functioning as designed; report issues to CSP management
• Communicate to OR coordinators suggestions related to surgeon preference card changes based on usage patterns
• Work with OR staff to identify instrumentation related to tray additions and reconfigurations and building surgeon specialty sets; report recommendations to the CSP Manager
• Respond to problem calls from surgery throughout the day as required
• Perform required daily audits of completed and post-op case carts and provide completed audit sheets to the CSP data entry clerk
• Participate in education of healthcare providers related to receipt, inspection, inventory, storage and distribution of instrumentation and medical supplies, function of specialty instrumentation, problem resolution, and instrument maintenance programs
• Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent
• Ability to read, write, and comprehend the English language
• 3 years of Sterile Processing Technician experience
• Certified Sterile Processing Technician through CBSPD or IAHCSMM
• Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with various hospital personnel and outside vendors
• Knowledge of surgical instruments as well as cleaning and sterilization processes
• Understanding of the care and handling of surgical instrumentation
• Ability to push and pull objects weighing up to 450 lbs and lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs
• Ability to provide high level of technical computer support and use
• Ability to use Windows-based applications such as Excel, Word, and other software to perform essential job functions

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate degree
• 5 years of Sterile Processing Technician experience
